Book Description
Excerpt from The Sandwich Island as They Are, Not as They Should Be My only excuse for giving these hasty sketches to the public must be, the thousand questions I am daily asked regarding the Sandwich Islands, since my return from them, and the general desire manifested by the community, just at this time, to know something definite of their past and present history. I have been stimulated also by a sense of duty to society, to expose the monstrous deception which has so long imposed upon the world, and especially upon those whose truthfulness and purity would prevent a suspicion of duplicity in others. At least, I trust an investigation may be the result of these developments, which ought long since to have been made by a bolder and more skilful hand than my own. Book Description
Excerpt from Sandwich Island: Notes It is with feelings of much diffidence I submit the following pages to a perusal by the public, hut it is with the hope that the object at which they aim will be speedily accomplished. Several pamphlets and volumes have already been issued from the press, concerning that most important of all the groups that stud the vast Pacific-the Sandwich Islands. But these facts have not deterred me from making my own observations, and employing my own language. If the present condition of affairs at the Hawaiian Islands augur any thing, there can not but be a good prospect that they will soon form an integral portion of the United States. They are absolutely essential to the protection and advancement of American commerce, and whoever owns them will be master of the Pacific. I have endeavored to portray the condition of things as they appeared to me in 1853, and my only aim has been impartiality, independent of all party consideration. I have taken especial pains to develop the past and present condition of the people, in their various relations, and have endeavored to specify a few reasons for the "annexation" of that important group of islands. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Sandwich Islands It will be seen, that the detail of missionary opera tions at the islands constitutes the main feature in the history of the nation. To disconnect the two things would be as impossible as to write the life of Washing ton without alluding to the American Revolution. Changes in the nation, effected by the introduction, progress and triumphs of Christianity, constitute the sum of Sandwich Islands' History. This fact, to the mind both of the christian and the philosopher, gives to the history most of its interest. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Sandwich Islands I have taken much the same method to collect information as in 1836. A Royal Historical Society has also been formed, by means of which some information has been gained. I have taken great pains to be correct, and fondly trust that no important statement is far from the truth. The work has been written amidst the daily cares and labors of the Seminary, and in a feeble and precarious state of health. It is hoped, therefore, that due allowance will be made for its many defects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History and General Views of the Sandwich Islands Mission The lectures were very imperfectlv prepare ed. In the autumn the approaching cold made it necessary for me to go South. At the various cities of the South I found a desire to hear respecting the Sandwich Is lands' mission. 1 therefore lectured, in some places more, and in other places less - at Baltimore, Fayetteville, N. C.; Columbia and Charleston, S. C.; Augusta, Ga; Montgomery and Mobile, Aa.; New 0rd leans and Natchez. My lectures were part ly historical and partly on the duty of Christians to evangelize the heathen. The characteristic fervor and warm-hearted pie ty of Christians at the South led them to feel much, and to request repeatedly that the'substance of what I had communicated might be sent to them afterward in a printed form. In compliance with this re quest, which I could not deny after the unbounded hospitality and true kindness which I at all places received, and with the.
