Book Description
Excerpt from The Ruin of Zululand, Vol. 1 of 2: An Account of British Doings in Zululand Since the Invasion of 1879 Being a Sequel to the History of the Zulu War IN continuation of such attempts as I have made to tell the English world a little of the truth concerning England's dealings, through her representatives, with the inhabitants of these far-away lands of ours in South Africa, I now put together and record the various events that have taken place since the termination of the Zulu war, having been in a position to learn the facts of the case as gathered by the persistent, conscientious, and disinterested labours of my father, and of my elder sister, who has been closely associated with him in all his labours. The suggestion that I should undertake the present work was made to me by my father upon the last occasion on which we talked together, on this or any other topic; for I was away from home when he fell ill, a fortnight after, and although I returned at once, it was just too late to see him again. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ruin of Zululand, Vol. 2 of 2: An Account of British Doings in Zululand Since the Invasion of 1879 Upon the 3rd of September, 1884, an event took place which obliges me to ask my readers' pardon for the form in which this work is brought to a close. Its concluding pages give little Myond a bare summary of the events which followed the installa tion proceedings of January 1883, and led up to Cetshwayo's death on the 8th of February, 1884. My subject, indeed, could not have been forced into two volumes with any advantage to itself, but I had been seriously warned of the difficulty of obtaining public attention for three volumes of this description, and had, therefore, meant to confine myself to two. On the day previous to the date first mentioned above, I posted to England a roll of manuscript which com plated about two-thirds of the intended volume, and I then had all my materials collected and partly arranged for the remaining chapters.
