"The following pages are intended to give a general, rather than a detailed, view of the Roscommon claim of peerage, which in respect of the length of time it was under investigation in the House of Lords, and the conflicting testimony it involved, is one of the most extra- ordinary on record. The speeches now published embrace all the important points of the evidence, and will serve to shew that there was no real foundation for the cases of either of the counter- claimants who disputed the right of Michael James Robert Dillon, now, as Earl of Roscommon, enjoying the dignity and honor of his ancestors"--P. [3]. The speeches refer to the creation of the James Dillon as the first Earl of Roscommon in 1622, and refer also to subsequent generations between James Dillon and Michael James Robert Dillon.
