Book Description
Excerpt from The Romance of Northumberland It is curious that in view of the time-honoured and perennial plaint of the more fastidious that the romantic portions of England are over-run, he should never have discovered that this is an hallucination due to the fact that, like most other people, he does not know his own country. An equally striking and spacious wilderness, for that matter, varying only in detail, lies also hidden from the tourist and from fugitive literature and journalism, in South Wales, but that is not celebrated in household ballads and familiar tales, and belongs rather to the song and story or the Cymry. But there is a great deal more in Northumberland than the map would suggest, much of which will, I trust, reveal itself to such readers as may bear me company through these pages. But to do justice to Northumberland between the covers of a single volume is not easy. To borrow a rather happy phrase from a well-known author, I would call this rather an "Appreciation" of that noble county. One consolation at any rate is mine: for with all the valuable historical, archaeological, and other work of a technical kind that has been done on Northumberland, no descriptive book of the nature of this one, appealing to the general reader, save one or two of purely local significance and circulation, has ever, so far as I know and can learn, been published. Book Description
Excerpt from Endura, or Three Generations: A New England Romance The author conceived the idea of making a rascal, unwittingly, furnish the sin ews of war, with the full hope and expectation of enjoying the fortune, as the result which was accomplished, according to the following story, would never have been reached if a great many heirs had been interested and consulted. It was a great stake for a gambler to play for, and, had not Providence interfered, he might have won. Such an accident as the friend of the family's discovering the fraud, could easily have happened. But it was a great question with the author, as to whether the lawyers who had the case in charge, having received retaining fees and large amounts of money from time to time, could honorably abandon his interests, even though the conviction was forced upon them that he was an impostor. The author consulted a number of able attorneys upon the subject, whose opinions differed greatly. And there appeared to be no better way out of the dilemma than that the impostor, himself, should be put out of the way; and nothing was more natural than that his accomplice should be the one to make way with him, when said accomplice became convinced that he had been robbed and fooled by the cunning rascal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Romance of an Emergency For the general reader to follow this story fully it may be well to call attention to a fact but little understood by the world at large, namely, that the Society which moves in our midst (numerically at almost a standstill as shown by the last religious census, but never more forcible than to-day in its known adherence to first principles the Society of Friends, so often spoken of as the Quakers, claims to do its part to purify commercial life by devoting a certain proportion of its members to all legitimate trades. Comparatively recently the Society announced amongst themselves that certain branches of business needed very special support, and an appeal was made to young men, some with university training, choosing their life-work to devote their powers and energies in the direction specified, and with marvellous results. England owes far more than is usually known to the Quaker Firms whose care - physical, moral and spiritual - of their employés forms a splendid example in our midst, an example which, if followed generally, would go far to settle the nation's problems so associated with' overcrowding and underpaying. Book Description
Excerpt from The Country Minister's Love Story This little town lay by the shore of a nearly land locked arm of the sea, a loch - not wild enough to be picturesque or terrible with storm and danger, not smooth enough to be dreamy and romantic. A steamer arrived at the pier twice daily in summer, once only in the unfairly long half of the year claimed by winter in the North. Book Description
Excerpt from The King's Deputy: A Romance of the Last Century I was well pleased when the trees of the Ph nix Park warned me that I was within a few miles of the heart of the city. Since I left Galway I had not seen the sun for rain and storm-cloud, and I had been now four days in the saddle. The wind still came moaning about me in gusts, but the rain had ceased, though the clouds scurried in heavy masses overhead. I drew rein for an instant and looked backwards, for I heard no longer the hoofs of my servant's horse behind, and, at this, I had no small concern lest evil should befall him and my baggage be lost.
