Book Description
This story of love and adventure follows the career of Alexander the Great. The romance was suggested by studies of the times of Philip of Macedon and Alexander, and it was because of the interest it excited, and not a desire to write an historical romance, that they had their origin. The novel is followed by a chapter giving an historical account of the life and deeds of the heroic prince during the period covered by the love story. The romantic love of Alexander for Roxana has interested mankind for two thousand years, and will continue to interest it as long as the world lasts. Scarcely less interesting are the picturesque events connected with the tragic lives of Darius, the Persian king, and his beautiful Queen, Statira, of which this story has much to say. The romance deals with the lives of many exalted men and women, not because they are exalted or of historical interest, but that they form a part of the love story. The romantic nature of Alexander's life and conquests makes his history in itself as interesting as the most absorbing novel.

Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ... HISTORICAL NOTES BEING AN ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT FROM THE TIME OF LEAVING MACEDONIA FOR THE CONQUEST OF PERSIA UP TO THE TIME OF HIS DEATH Having subdued the barbarous nations to the north, east, and west of Macedonia, and again quieted Greece, Alexander set out from Pella in April, 334 B. C. on the long-contemplated invasion of Persia. His march to Sestos, on the western shore of the Hellespont, a distance of three hundred and fifty miles, occupied twenty days, his fleet of one hundred and sixty triremes following along the shore. Reaching the Hellespont, he gave orders for the transfer of the troops to Abydos, on the Asiatic shore, after which he set sail for Ancient Troy. There he offered up sacrifices and libations to Achilles, his ancestor, and made propitiatory gifts to the manes of Priam, the murdered Trojan King -- dead a thousand years -- lest somehow his august shade should bring to naught the contemplated conquest of Persia. Strange contrast of superstitious belief and common-sense resolve. But in this Alexander was not more strange than in other things. A poet and dreamer, he was yet a man of definite purpose; an idealist, yet a man of practical accomplishments; amiable and complaisant, yet of iron will; an enlightened scholar, yet a bigot in his religious observances. For in this last respect the Christian of our day believes not more devoutly in the ethics of his faith nor observes its precepts more regardfully than did Alexander accord the belief of pagan Greece. He was fond of quoting the sayings of one of the philosophers, that all men were governed by God, because in everything that which is chief is divine. It was a philosophic saying of his that God was the common Father of all, but more...
