After Independence from British rule in 1947, the Mughal forts of Delhi and Lahore were divided by the Indian-Pakistan border. The second half of the dissertation compares the symbolic significance of the two forts in their respective countries. Chapter Three considers the place of the Mughals---which has become synonymous with Muslim rule and a longer presence of 'foreign' rule---in India today. The final chapter examines how Pakistan's ongoing need to justify its existence as separate from India as well as several decades of political instability is reflected in shared narratives constructed around the Lahore Fort.
