Book Description
Despite its relevance to the subsequent development of Western Islamic studies, the intellectual contribution of early modern Catholicism is still an under-researched area. The aim of this volume is to fill this gap, offering a series of essays dealing with the study of the Qur’an and Arabic language in early modern Catholic Europe. Focusing on the circulation of manuscripts, translations and printed books, the essays highlight how Catholic Orientalism contributed to the birth and spread of Western Islamic studies, although sometimes it was still directed towards religious polemics. Among the protagonists of this period of Islamic studies, the volume will focus on Catholic priests, missionaries, religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites) Eastern Christians, converts, and other prominent figures in the Catholic culture of the time. Special attention will be given to the work of Ludovico Marracci, author of a fundamental edition of the Arabic text and Latin translation of the Qur’an with an introduction, notes, refutations and religious and linguistic insights. The volume is of interest to an audience of specialists and non-specialists interested both in Islamic and Qur'anic studies and in the history of modern Catholicism, missions, and Orientalism

The War of the Three Gods
Author: Peter Crawford
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1848846126
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 279
Book Description
War of the Three Gods is a military history of the first half of seventh century, with heavy focus on the reign of the Eastern Roman Emperor Heraclius (AD 610-641). This was a pivotal time in world history as well as a dramatic one. The Eastern Roman Empire was brought to the very brink of extinction by the Sassanid Persians, before Heraclius managed to inflict a crushing defeat on the Sassanids with a desperate, final gambit. His conquests were short-lived, however, for the newly-converted adherents of Islam burst upon the region, administering the coup de grace to Sassanid power and laying siege to Constantinople itself to usher in a new era. ??Peter Crawford skilfully narrates the three-way struggle between the Christian Byzantine, Sassanid Persian and Islamic empires, a period peopled with fascinating characters, including Heraclius, Khusro II and the Prophet Muhammad himself. Many of the epic battles and sieges are described in as much detail as possible including Nineveh, Yarmouk, Qadisiyyah and Nihawand, Jerusalem and Constantinople. The strategies and tactics of these very different armies are discussed and analysed, while maps allow the reader to place the events and follow the varying fortunes of the contending empires. This is an exciting and important study of a conflict that reshaped the map of the world.

The Great Arab Conquests
Author: Hugh Kennedy
Publisher: Da Capo Press
ISBN: 0306817284
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 466
Book Description
Today's Arab world was created at breathtaking speed. In just over one hundred years following the death of Mohammed in 632, Arabs had subjugated a territory with an east-west expanse greater than the Roman Empire, and they did it in about one-half the time. By the mid-eighth century, Arab armies had conquered the thousand-year-old Persian Empire, reduced the Byzantine Empire to little more than a city-state based around Constantinople, and destroyed the Visigoth kingdom of Spain. The cultural and linguistic effects of this early Islamic expansion reverberate today. This is the first popular English-language account in many years of this astonishing remaking of the political and religious map of the world. Hugh Kennedy's sweeping narrative reveals how the Arab armies conquered almost everything in their path, and brings to light the unique characteristics of Islamic rule. One of the few academic historians with a genuine talent for story telling, Kennedy offers a compelling mix of larger-than-life characters, fierce battles, and the great clash of civilizations and religions.

The Final Roman Emperor, the Islamic Antichrist, and the Vatican's Last Crusade
Author: Thomas Horn
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780996409544
Category : Antichrist
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Following the release of their first three international bestsellers--Petrus Romanus, Exo-Vaticana, and On the Path of the Immortals--Thomas Horn and Cris Putnam were swamped with interview requests from radio, television, and print media outlets around the world. When they accurately predicted the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI one full year in advance, even naming the precise time he would step down, global shockwaves raised compelling questions regarding why the Vatican has an advanced telescope set atop Mt. Graham in Arizona where the Jesuits admit they are monitoring "something" approaching Earth. After the authors' second report was published in Exo-Vaticana, the pope's top astronomer took to the airwaves in an attempt to explain the role he and other church astronomers are playing in regard to the LUCIFER device, as well as their developing doctrines concerning extraterrestrial life and the impact it may soon have on Earth's religions (Christianity in particular). Then, in the third book by Horn and Putnam, the authors set out with cameras and field investigators to unearth their most astonishing discovery yet: Mt. Graham is a "portal"--the Native Americans who fought the Vatican and NASA told them--a gateway to another dimension. And, as the Vatican knows and the authors uncovered, it is not the only one. Even then, they had no idea what secrets the Vatican was shielding until now...FOR THEIR LAST ENTRY INTO THE 4-YEAR INVESTIGATION REVEALS:Tom Horn's greatest prediction yet (this will shake the foundations of the world!)The WMD that ISIS will use, and how it will lead to an ApocalypsePetrus Romanus, Albert Pike, the Islamic State, and the coming ArmageddonPope Francis becomes the Destroyer (or shall there be another?)...The Last Crusade Agenda, hidden in plain sightThe prophecy of the "Last Roman Emperor" in the Vatican vaultsThe prophecy of the Cumaean Sibyl on the Muslim's MahdiGiants, a hidden Vatican doorway, and the coming Battle for the Cosmic MountainWhy many Christians, Muslims, and Jews will accept the "Last Emperor" as MessiahPreparations by the Occult Elite and their Visions of the Final Roman Emperor
