Book Description

Book Description
The thesis aims at development of titanium oxide and hydroxyapatite coatings with the use of suspension plasma spraying. This new technique enables obtaining the coatings with very fine crystal grains being smaller than 100 nm (nanostructured). To attain this objective, two type of suspension feeder were developed: (i) with a pressurized vessel and, (ii) with two peristaltic pumps. The suspension were formulated using very fine pigment, surfactant and distilled water. The spraying process was optimized to obtain continuous coatings having thickness ranging from 5 to 25 μm. The coatings microstructure was tested using X-ray photelectrons spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Xray diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscope. Electron emission from the surface of titania sprayed coatings was also tested and explained by the microstructure. This coating were prepared with a gradient of crystal grain size by spraying initially coarse powder deposit and, on the top, suspension sprayed one: Hydroxyapatite deposits were sprayed staring from suspension formulated from crushing of spray-dried powder. This coatings were realized using a gradient of chemical composition by simultaneous deposition of titania suspension. Titania coatings were chosen in order to improve adhesion to metallic titanium substrate.

Book Description
This fully revised, industry-standard resource offers practical details on every aspect of the fundamentals necessary for understanding thermal spray technology, from powder all the way to the final part. The second edition is presented in a reader-friendly format that is split into four parts. Part I presents a review of thermal spray coating and its position in the broad field of surface modification technologies. Highlights of combustion and thermal plasmas are given with an expanded treatment of in-flight plasma-particle interactions. The second and third parts deal respectively with an updated presentation of thermal spray technologies and coating formation, including solution and suspension plasma spraying. The last part of the book includes a comparative analysis of different thermal spray processes, which is essential for the optimal selection of the appropriate thermal spray process in a given application. Coverage of system integration has been expanded with the addition of a detailed discussion of online instrumentation and process diagnostics and numerous examples of industrial scale spray booth designs. Attention is also given to coating finishing and health and safety issues. An extensive review is presented of thermal spray applications grouped in terms of process objectives and present use in different industrial sectors. This book will serve as an invaluable resource as a textbook for graduate courses in the field and as an exhaustive reference for professionals involved in the thermal spray field.

Book Description
Reflecting the progress in recent years, this book provides in-depth information on the preparation, chemistry, and engineering of bioceramic coatings for medical implants. It is authored by two renowned experts with over 30 years of experience in industry and academia, who know the potentials and pitfalls of the techniques concerned. Following an introduction to the principles of biocompatibility, they present the structures and properties of various bioceramics from alumina to zirconia. The main part of the work focuses on coating technologies, such as chemical vapor deposition, sol-gel deposition and thermal spraying. There then follows a discussion of the major interactions of bioceramics with bone or tissue cells, complemented by an overview of the in-vitro testing methods of the biomineralization properties of bioceramics. The text is rounded off by chapters on the functionalization of bioceramic coatings and a look at future trends. As a result, the authors bring together all aspects of the latest techniques for designing, depositing, testing, and implementing improved and novel bioceramic coating compositions, providing a full yet concise overview for beginners and professionals.
