Book Description
Excerpt from The Platonic Dialogues for English Readers, Vol. 1 The former volume of "the Platonic Dialogues for English Readers" has met with a reception so favourable as to induce me to offer to the public a similar version of another group of those Dialogues. The Dialogues I now publish I term "the Antisophist Dialogues," inasmuch as they are mainly occupied with discussions in which persons who have been called "Sophists" by Plato and by his commentators, are represented as refuted, perplexed, or silenced. Book Description
Excerpt from A Selection of Passages From Plato for English Readers, Vol. 1 The following collection of 'extracts from the English translation of the Dialogues of Plato' was undertaken by the editor in accordance with the wish of the late Master of Balliol. The Master himself helped to choose the passages for insertion, and the larger portion of the ms. Was submitted to him before his death. He was of opinion that the selection would be of value to readers who might be deterred by the size and cost of the complete work, as well as to young students; while the University Extension movement, and the increasing number of Colleges for Women, both in England and America, also seemed to offer a field for a compilation of this nature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dialogues of Plato, Vol. 1 of 5: Translated Into English, With Analyses and Introduction I have also derived much assistance from the great work of Mr. Grote, which contains excellent analyses of the Dialogues, and is rich in original thoughts and observations. I agree with him in rejecting as futile the attempt of Schleiermacher and others to arrange the Dialogues of Plato into a harmonious whole. Any such arrangement appears to me not only to be unsupported by evidence, but to involve an ana chronism in the history Of philosophy. There is a com mon spirit in the writings of Plato, but not a unity of design in the whole, nor perhaps a perfect unity in any Single Dialogue. The hypothesis of a general plan which is worked out in the successive Dialogues is an after-thought of the critics who have attributed a system to writings belonging to an age when system had not as yet taken possession of philosophy. Book Description
[Being and Logos is] a philosophical adventure of rare inspiration. . . . Its power to illuminate the text . . . , its ecumenicity of inspiration, its methodological rigor, its originality, and its philosophical profundity—all together make it one of the few philosophical interpretations that the philosopher will want to re-read along with the dialogues themselves. A superadded gift is the author’s prose, which is a model of lucidity and grace." —International Philosophical Quarterly John Sallis's luminous reading of six major Platonic dialogues—Apology, Meno, Phaedrus, Cratylus, Republic, and Sophist—weaves discussion of dramatic and mythical aspects together with basic philosophical issues. Being and Logos fundamentally reorients our reading and understanding of the platonic dialogues. This new edition of this classic of philosophical interpretation augments the Collected Writings of John Sallis, published by Indiana University Press.
