Book Description
Two hundred and six electronic decays of the pi°, pi° yields e + e− + e+ + e−, were observed in a hydrogen bubble chamber. The decay distributions of the electron pairs and the total rate for this process are shown to be in good agreement with theory. An examination of correlations of the e+e− pair decay planes on the basis of electrodynamic predictions is in agreement with the hypothesis that the pi° is pseudoscalar, but disagrees for scalar pions by 3.6 standard deviations. (auth).

Book Description
We present a new determination of the parity of the neutral pion via the double Dalitz decay [pi]° 2!ee−ee−. Our sample, which consists of 30 511 candidate decays, was collected from K{sub L} 2![pi]°[pi]°[pi]° decays in flight at the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We confirm the negative [pi]° parity, and place a limit on scalar contributions to the [pi]° 2!e+e−e+e− decay amplitude of less than 3.3% assuming CPT conservation. The [pi]°[gamma]*[gamma]* form factor is well described by a momentum-dependent model with a slope parameter fit to the final state phase space distribution. Additionally, we have measured the branching ratio of this mode to be B([pi]° 2!e+e−e+e−) = (3.26 ± 0.18) x 10−5.

The Form Factor of the Neutral Pion
Author: Peter Nemethy
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Mesons
Languages : en
Pages : 76
Book Description
In an experiment performed at Columbia University's Nevis Cyclotron, the decay 'neutral-pion to gamma photon + electron + positron' was observed. Using a system of counters and spark chambers 2200 events were recorded with an opening angle of the Dalitz pair near 120 deg. The effect of pi-zero structure on the invariant mass spectrum of the pair is interpreted as an electromagnetic form factor for the neutral-pion. The form factor is a linear function, (gamma)(x) = 1 + ax, of the invariant mass squared, x. The experimental result for the form factor slope is a = (+0.01 plus or minus 0.11) (1/(pion mass)sq.).
