Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 16: December, 1919 Two decisions made by the Oberlin college trustees at their annual meet ing November 14 are of major interest to the alumni. It was voted to increase the salaries of the teaching force 50 per cent., to take effect from September 1, 1919, the amount of increases for other employees of the college being committed to the prudential committee to fix. The trustees also voted approval of the plans for alumni reorganization, presented by Cleveland R. Cross, '03, chairman of the committee. The pro posed constitution for the new associa tion was printed in the last issue of the Alumni Magazine. The board also faced the urgent need of a new building for college recitation purposes to cost approximately $300, 000, and of the additional buildings for the Theological group to cost $250, 000. The trustees themselves did not deem it wise to enter upon an elaborate campaign for the collection of the money necessary for these buildings, but the alumni will be asked to con tribute approximately necessary in order to carry a part of the program for increase of salaries. The movement for reorganization was initiated by the alumni them selves; it is for them finally to indorse or reject the plan presented. It has been a difficult and complicated task to which the sub-committee has devoted itself during the summer and fall. Mr. Cross and his associates have done their work well and deserve the thanks of their fellow alumni. Staub, '04, president of the association, introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. Edward I. Bosworth, who was warmly greeted. In Speaking briefly on The Greater Oberlin, Dr. Bosworth spoke of the evident necessity in our time of the introduction of courses in college which would lead to a better understanding of the international mind. Following the conclusion of the ma sical program, a. General handshaking ensued, in which everyone tried to see and converse with everybody else. Not in years has such a large gathering taken place, and there are some who say that if a delightful glee club of young ladies had not come eastward and bud ded at about Easter-tide, it never could have happened. At any rate, there was a great deal of good fellowship and good dancing afterward. The unusual amount of enthusiasm that was everywhere in evidence during the entire evening is sufficient evidence that there is a need in greater New York for reunions of this kind. Soon after this she legally joined in wedlock the first couple married by a woman. Miss Anthony and the Rev. William H. Channing being witnesses. During this year she was sent as a reg ular delegate to the first world's temper ance convention held in New York, but was denied a delegate's rights because she was a woman. This was in 1853, but even then the world had moved a cog or two since 1850, when the same Rev. Antoinette Brown was expelled from service in a ladies' missionary society because she had Spoken in favor of political equality at the first Women's Rights association held in Massachusetts.
