AS regards time, it is true, these settlements are farther from our shores than British North America, for hitherto English people have discovered few good reasons for visiting West Africa, and some very cogent ones for keep ing away from it. Liverpool alone has under taken the conquest of the land, and through Liverpool all the trade between Great Britain and this part of Africa passes. The passenger traffic is so limited. That the boats of the African Steamship Company and the British and African Line, which run in conjunction with each other, are easily able to deal with it. These boats rarely exceed 3000 tons gross, and their highest speed under favour able circumstances is not more than 10 knots.
