Book Description
Excerpt from The School Chemistry: A New Text-Book for High Schools and Academies The chief significance of the foregoing is that, as far as possible, each pupil is to perform the experiments for himself, make his own observations, and draw his own conclusions. This is important, whether some of the experiments have been performed by the instructor before the class or not. In every case there must be care that the conclusions arrived at are founded upon actual facts. See that each pupil has a small note-book, and that he always has it at hand when he is making his experiments. See that the details of all experiments made by him are recorded by him in this book at the time of the experiment, not subsequently. In addition to the description of the Operation, the record should contain an account of all observed phenomena, and the conclusions drawn from them. The ability to observe accurately and completely, and the ability to draw proper conclusions from observed facts, are the two greatest benefits to be derived from the study of general chemistry. Make frequent and careful examinations of the pupil's notes, seeking to lead him to accurate observation, to intelligent discrimination between essential and merely incidental conditions and results of an experiment, to correctness of conclusions, and to precision and concise ness of statement. Do not let your pupils get the idea that they, chemists; do not think that you ought to make chemists' of them. After this course has been completed, a course in some good school of applied science will be needed for the pupil who desires to become a chemist.' The author would be glad to receive suggestions from teachers using this book, or to answer any inquiries they may make. He may be addressed at Cleveland, Ohio. He gratefully acknowledges the aid given him by many. Especial mention is due to Professor Albert W. Smith of the Case School of Applied Science; his work shows on almost every page. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Text-Book of Chemistry, for Use in High Schools and Academies The sole purpose of this volume is to provide an elementary course of chemistry suited to the wants of students and teachers in high schools and academies. With this purpose in view I have endeavored, - I. To seize upon the fundamental facts and principles of the science, and submit them to a simple and concise, but at the same time a clear and accurate, treatment. II. To present the subjects which will be of greatest value to a student whose course of study must end when he leaves the preparatory school, and which are, at the same time, most desirable, as a preparation for higher courses, to those who may in future pursue them. III. To thoroughly systematize the whole, securing a logical order of subjects and an arrangement of topics adapted to encourage the best methods of study and to facilitate the best methods of teaching. IV. To encourage a complete mastery of what is undertaken, by concentrating study upon a brief course, and providing for thorough reviews at short intervals by means of summaries of principles and exercises with problems at the ends of sections or chapters. V. To present the science in the light of modern theories, sparing no pains to make the work represent the present state of chemistry fairly and fully, so far as its elementary character will permit. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book on Chemistry: For the Use of Schools and Colleges Tms text-book on Chemistry is intended for the use of Schools and Colleges. It embodies the valuable parts of the work on the same subject published by my father in 1846, which satisfied so completely the public wants that it passed through more than forty editions. It has been found necessary to make this book larger than that by a hundred pages, and to incorporate a very considerable number of new illustrations, in order to bring the subject fully up to the present time. A free use has been made of all the most recent authorities, both in English and other languages, and it is believed that nothing essential for the student has been omitted.
