Besides, some respect seemed to be due to those who had bestowed the sanction of their approval on the former edition; and, under all the circumstances, no attempt has been made to re-write the book, or to re arrange the materials. My wish has rather been to carry out my original plan in regard to this volume, and to make it as much better in all particulars, as it might have been, if I had possessed ten years ago all the additional knowledge and experience, which I have been endeavourin g to acquire in that interval of time.
