The real names of the characters in this will not be told for the protection of their identity. I hope that whoever read this book will enjoy it, relate to it, and get some positive messages from reading this book; that will be able to help them in their own lives. I hope it will especially help the teenage young girls. I hope they take notes of what not to do.

In Black Madness :: Mad Blackness Therí Alyce Pickens rethinks the relationship between Blackness and disability, unsettling the common theorization that they are mutually constitutive. Pickens shows how Black speculative and science fiction authors such as Octavia Butler, Nalo Hopkinson, and Tananarive Due craft new worlds that reimagine the intersection of Blackness and madness. Pickens considers Butler's Fledgling as an archive of Black madness that demonstrates how race and ability shape subjectivity while constructing the building blocks for antiracist and anti-ableist futures. Anshel (1990) examined the feelings and perceptions of African American intercollegiate football players about racial issues and the implications they had for the field of sport psychology. However, the experiences of African American female athletes have not been explored. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine how African American Division I female athletes experience racism. A second purpose of this thesis was to assist coaches and sport psychology consultants in understanding African American Division I female athletes so they can help them reach their full personal and performance potential. A semi-structured interview guide was developed using a modified version of Gilligan’s (1989) Moral Conflict and Choice Interview. Data analysis of seven participant interviews revealed four major themes regarding experiences of racism and whether or not these athletes decided to utilize their voice: (a) “speaking out” depends on the relationship; (b) being the “only one” in multiple life domains; (c) stereotypes and racist assumptions; and (d) Speaking up could reinforce stereotypes. It appeared that African American Division I female athletes wrestled with racism both in and out of sport. In addition, the racism they faced came in many forms; it was verbal and nonverbal, overt and covert. Not only did they report struggling with general stress, they also struggled with stress that came from racism within sport competition. It is imperative for sport psychology consultants to understand how racism affects African American female athletes at this level. Also, suggestions are given for Sport Psychology consultants who interact with African American female athletes.

Mary McLeod Bethune was a significant figure in American political history. She devoted her life to advancing equal social, economic, and political rights for blacks. She distinguished herself by creating lasting institutions that trained black women for visible and expanding public leadership roles. Few have been as effective in the development of women’s leadership for group advancement. Despite her accomplishments, the means, techniques, and actions Bethune employed in fighting for equality have been widely misinterpreted. Mary McLeod Bethune and Black Women’s Political Activism seeks to remedy the misconceptions surrounding this important political figure. Joyce A. Hanson shows that the choices Bethune made often appear contradictory, unless one understands that she was a transitional figure with one foot in the nineteenth century and the other in the twentieth. Bethune, who lived from 1875 to 1955, struggled to reconcile her nineteenth-century notions of women’s moral superiority with the changing political realities of the twentieth century. She used two conceptually distinct levels of activism—one nonconfrontational and designed to slowly undermine systemic racism, the other openly confrontational and designed to challenge the most overt discrimination—in her efforts to achieve equality.
