Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1: Part II; Medical History, Being the Second Medical Volume The nature of the subject will, I trust, justify this determination. Not only do the Alvine Fluxes usually cause more sickness and mortality among troops during war than any other group of diseases, but this circumstance affords a better opportunity for their study than can commonly be obtained in times of peace, so that it has heretofore happened that many of the most important accounts of these disorders, whether in ancient or modern times, have been the fruit of military experience. When I came to study carefully the documents and pathological specimens relating to this subject which had been collected by the industry of our Medical Officers during the Civil War, I formed the opinion that they were well worthy of presentation in detail; and when I began the task of interpreting them by the aid of previous experience, I was led to believe that the time had arrived when modern observations might profitably be contrasted with the records of the past, and the historical basis of the dominant opinions of the present day be subjected to careful and critical scrutiny. Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (1861-65), Vol. 1: Surgical History Therefore, in 1865, it was suggested, in the report of materials available for a Surgical History of the Wari' that the wounds and operations be classified according to regions, important cases being described at length, and brief abstracts or numerical tabular state ments being furnished of the less important cases. It was decided that this plan should be adopted, and that the reports of medical directors and others, relating to the field service, should be published as appended docu ments to the Medical and Surgical History. They are bound in Volume I, Part I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1: Part III; Medical History; Being the Third Medical Volume If the deaths from unknown causes in this statement be distributed among the three causes specified in the proportion which the figures of each bear to their total, the deaths from disease will be found to amount to among the white troops, and to among the colored tr00ps, giving a total of deaths from disease. Looking now at Table Of which gives a general summary of the sickness and mor tality among the white troops during the war, it will be found that, excluding deaths attributed to wounds, accidents and injuries, there were reported deaths from diseases that are specified and 449 from diseases that are not specified, making a total of deaths reported as from disease.
