Of their second generation, Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) was an outstanding member, also acquiring a wide range of other material. Indeed, so important was his library that it became one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753. The Cotton Manuscripts were assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571-1631), antiquarian and bibliophile. They are one of the major manuscript collections in the British Library. Cotton obtained manuscripts from the collections of the antiquarian scholar John Leland (d. 1552), the mathematician and astronomer John Dee (d. 1609), and the statesman William Cecil, Baron Burghley (d. 1598), among others. This archive includes 360 manuscripts from the Cotton Collection. Most were selected by Professor Paul Harvey, University of Durham, and a former member of the British Library Manuscript Department, for the original publication on microfilm in 1987. It includes all manuscripts that are primary sources for English literature and British history from the middle of the twelfth century to the end of the fifteenth century.
