Excerpt from The Life of Titian, Vol. 1 of 2: With Anecdotes of the Distinguished Persons of His Time Vies des Peintres, fix it in 1477, and make him ninety-nine at his death but as Giorgione was confessedly older than Titian, and was born in 1478, I have preferred the joint authorities of Vasari and Sandrart, who affirm that Titian was born in 1480, at Capo del Cadore, a small town On the borders Of the r1ver' Pieve, about five miles from the Alps and dependent on Cadore, on the confines Of Friuli, under the Venetian government. His parents were called Vecelli; Of an honourable family, to which belonged St Titian, Bishop Of Odezza, from whom, no doubt, our artist derived his name. He was sent, when a child Of nine Or ten years Old, to Venice, to be placed in the house and under the care Of his father's brother, who was possessed of one of those lucrative Officesiwhich were always given to citizens of eminence. Book Description
The first definitive biography of the master painter in more than a century, Titian: His Life is being hailed as a "landmark achievement" for critically acclaimed author Sheila Hale (Publishers Weekly). Brilliant in its interpretation of the 16th-century master's paintings, this monumental biography of Titian draws on contemporary accounts and recent art historical research and scholarship, some of it previously unpublished, providing an unparalleled portrait of the artist, as well as a fascinating rendering of Venice as a center of culture, commerce, and power. Sheila Hale's Titian is destined to be this century's authoritative text on the life of greatest painter of the Italian High Renaissance.

Book Description
Excerpt from Titian His Life and Times; With Some Account of His Family, Chiefly From New and Unpublished Records, Vol. 1 of 2 The materials for Titian's Life and Times are not to be found in a condensed or easily accessible form, nor are they to be collected otherwise than by patient search and laborious reading. In the contemporary "Dialogues" of Dolce, Pino, and Biondo, we are treated more frequently to anecdote than to fact, and the letters of Aretino which illustrate the period extending from 1527 to 1556 require to be sifted and controlled with the more care as they were often altered and interpolated to serve a political purpose. Vasari's biography, written ten years before Titian's death, is necessarily curt and incomplete, but it is feebly supplemented by Sansovino, whilst Borghini's "Riposo" and Tizianello's "Anonimo," printed in 1584 and 1622, are altogether sketchy and imperfect. Ridolfi, the first to attempt a finished life of Titian, had ample sources of information at his command, but he used them superficially, and his account of the great master is as short as it is slight and diffuse.
