Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Saint Philip Neri, Apostle of Rome, Vol. 1 In this translation I have not ventured to change, seldom and slightly to compress. The portrait is by a master; it would be hazardous to meddle with one touch of his hand. It is, Speaking under correction, so faithful that it may seem to smack somewhat too strongly of its native soil. But it is well we should feel as we read that we have before us the thoughts of an Italian mind, serene, luminous, and subtle, and the rich feeling of a Neapolitan heart, expressed in warm and sympathetic words. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Saint Philip Neri: Apostle of Rome, and Founder of the Congregation of the Oratory; From the Italian of Father Bacci of the Roman Oratory After a space of thirty-four years this second edition has been long out of print, and is rarely to be met with. A new impression being a desideratum for the devotees of the Saint, it has been thought advisable to reprint the Fifth and Sixth Books and the Letters, and make two volumes of the work. The miracles are of themselves most interesting reading, and, moreover, give a graphic picture of Italian life in the beginning of the seventeenth century; they also help us to understand better the rapid increase of devotion to St. Philip in Italy. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. Philip's Earliest Years In Eome. When Philip Neri, in his twentieth year, fixed on Fiome as his abode, he had an education of mind and heart befitting a man who is destined to become great. The influence on him of the city in which he was born, the example and teaching of his parents and masters, his intimacy with the friars of S. Dominic, whom he regarded with such reverence and love, the places he had seen, all combined to ensure this. But there was an influence more powerful still . Philip's clear and thoughtful mind, together with his recollected and meditative habits, would lead him to reflect much on the events of public life in his early years. Those events were of unwonted importance, and we may be sure that Philip was not a listless and unintelligent spectator of a scene so various and so stirring. How often and with what sorrow of heart he would think of the losses inflicted on the Church and on Italy! How continually would he raise to heaven those eyes beaming with charity, pleading for his mother the holy Church, which he loved more than his own life, and which lay before him torn by heresy, sunk in corruption, its life tainted and threatened by a revived and aggressive paganism! Philip was five years old when Leo X. died suddenly, in the prime of life, and not without suspicion of poison. His pontificate had been, in some respects, great and splendid; but, unhappily, the baleful seed of Protestantism then sprang up and bore fruit. He was succeeded by Adrian VI., a Fleming by birth, a man of simple habits, frugal even to parsimony in his mode of life, and an enemy to the literature and art of the day, because both had become profane and licentious. Adrian projected many and weighty reforms, and would probably...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Saint Philip Neri, Apostle of Rome, and Founder of the Congregation of the Oratory, Vol. 2 Muzio Achillei, a priest at S. Severino, having returned from Rome to his native place, gave himself up to a belief in dreams and visions, and seeking after sensible sweetnesses in devotion. He never spoke to any one about this, neither did he write a word of it to the holy father, but Philip nevertheless sent him letters warning him that he must not walk by that path, because it was easy to be deceived by the devil in such matters, and also to injure our bodily health; and furthermore he admonished him of a certain occasion of sin into which he had fallen rather by im prudence than from an evil intention, and gave him rules for avoiding similar dangers. Of all this Muzio himself affirmed that the holy father could know nothing except by Divine revelation, for he had not disclosed it to any one.
