Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of an Army Surgeon During the Peninsular War, 1912 As this Journal is undertaken at the request of one or two very dear Friends, and as it will certainly never come under the inspection of many others, I trust they will deem this some Apology for the Egotisms that will naturally prevail in it. On the 10th August, 1809, I embarked on Board the Thomas Transport in order to join the 40th Regiment with Sir Arthur Wellesly. It was intended we should sail the following Morning, but the wind getting round to the westward prevented us. In the course of the nth was introduced to Capn. Rodney, of H.M.S. Fylla, under Orders for Lisbon with Money. Capn. R. very politely offered me a Passage. An offer so agreeable I immediately availed myself of, and lost no time in removing my Luggage from the Thomas to the Fylla. I had particular pleasure in bidding adieu to the former Vessel, as, besides the inconvenience naturally resulting from her smallness, the Officers on board her were from what I could ascertain in so very short a period generally exceptionable. Very strong westerly winds prevented our sailing till the 15th, on which day we received the particulars of the Memorable Battle of Talavera. It was a source of some regret to us that we could not convey to our friends in Spain & Portugal an account of the Capture of Flushing. On this day I recollected that my dear & revered Father completed his seventy-third Year, and, while I offered up a Prayer to the Almighty that his valuable Life might yet be spared to his Family and Friends, I had a sensation of severe pain originating in the idea that from his advanced age I should never see him more. Book Description
A surgeons view of the war in Iberia Charles Boutflower was the son of a Yorkshire vicar born in 1782. He studied surgery at the University of Edinburgh and joined the 40th Regiment of Foot-then a Somerset regiment-in 1801 as an assistant surgeon. He served with that regiment in the West Indies, South America and thereafter during the Peninsular War against Napoleon's invading French armies. It is from his time in Spain that his Journal is particularly drawn. Although Boutflower was a medical man his writings are well rounded and comprehensive giving the reader much insight into the campaigns he experienced, scenes of the battlefield and his own perspective on the course of the war in general. Boutflower was promoted to surgeon in 1812 and took his place on Sir Rowland Hill's staff. This is a valuable contribution the our understanding of the war Wellington's Army fought and will be much appreciated by students and casual readers alike.

Book Description
A rarity amongst Peninsular accounts, are those that come from the medical services of the British army, Boutflower’s journal was printed sixty years after his death but remains even now fresh and interesting. His duty was to patch, tend and mend the fighting men of the 40th Regiment of Foot, during the fierce fighting against the French. His journal principally focuses on the campaigns under the Duke of Wellington that stretched from 1809 to 1814, although his service had drawn him to South America and the West Indies beforehand. He was promoted to the staff of Sir Rowland “Daddy” Hill as surgeon in 1812, but not before he had seen and described the butchery of the battle of Albuera. Also present at the battle of Salamanca his narrative, in spite of some erratic spelling, contemporaneous, vital and gripping. A valuable and memorable work. Author – Charles Boutflower – (1782 - 1844)

Book Description
The precepts laid down are the result of the experience acquired in the war in the Peninsula, from the first battle of Rolia in 1808, to the last in Belgium, of Waterloo in 1815They have been the means of saving the lives, and of relieving, if not even of preventing, the miseries of thousands of our fellow-creatures throughout the civilized world.George James Guthrie is one of the unsung heroes of the Peninsular War and Waterloo, and of British military medicine. He was a guiding light in surgery. He was not only a soldier's surgeon and a hands-on doctor, he also set a precedent by keeping records and statistics of cases. While the innovations in the medical services of the French Republic and Empire have been publicized, a military surgeon of the caliber of Guthrie has been largely ignored by students of the period until now. Michael Crumplin, in this comprehensive and graphic study of this remarkable doctor, follows him through his career in the field and recognizes his exceptional contribution to British military medicine and to Wellington's army.

Book Description
In 1994 Ian Fletcher published his book Fields of Fire, which was the first book to show Wellingtons Peninsular War battlefields in full color. Now, almost 20 years on, he returns with a second book, The Peninsular War: Wellingtons Battlefields Revisited which shows how things have changed since 1994. The beautiful photographs cover all of Wellingtons major battles, and many smaller engagements also, to show them in all their glory, from the snowy Galician mountains, to the dry, dusty plain of Salamanca, and from the low rolling slopes of Albuera to the breathtaking Pyrenees. Coming as it does in the middle of the 200th anniversary of the Peninsular War, this book is a timely reminder of one of the most successful campaigns ever fought by the British Army.
