The Molecular Basis of Programmed Cell Death and Neuroinflammation in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Author: Ramkumar Mathur
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832543499
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 138
Book Description
Age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are characterized by progressive neuroinflammation as well as neuronal degeneration. Apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy are all types of programmed cell death that are morphologically distinct from one another. Over the last decade, extensive research has been conducted on necroptosis, resulting in a better understanding of its molecular underpinnings and role in neurodegenerative diseases. A later study investigates the processes of apoptosis and necroptosis, as well as their roles in the activation of inflammatory immune responses. Although there is a distinct mode of cell death with distinct morphological characteristics, its identification and implications in neurological diseases are still unknown. Interestingly, emerging evidence has established a direct link between epigenetic and posttranslational modifications and neurodegenerative disease. Using epigenetic and proteomic methods, researchers uncovered genes and proteins that may play a function in the area of neuroinflammation, a role that has hitherto been overlooked. New pharmacological targets and therapeutic options for neurodegenerative diseases are being investigated in order to gain a better understanding of the disease's origins and progression by using neuronal death and neuroinflammation models that are associated with epigenetic changes.

Neuronal and Synaptic Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability
Author: Carlo Sala
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128005335
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
Neuronal and Synaptic Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability provides the latest information on Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), the lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders that present in early childhood and affect how individuals communicate and relate to others and their surroundings. In addition, three quarters of ASD patients also manifest severe intellectual disability. Though certain genes have been implicated, ASDs remain largely a mystery, and research looking into causes and cellular deficits are crucial for better understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. Despite the prevalence and insidious nature of this disorder, this book remains to be an extensive resource of information and background on the state of current research in the field. The book serves as a reference for this purpose, and discusses the crucial role synaptic activity plays in proper brain function. In addition, the volume discusses the neurodevelopmental synaptopathies and serves as a resource for scientists and clinicians in all biomedical science specialties. This research has been crucial for recent studies that have provided a rationale for the development of pharmacological agents able to counteract functional synaptic anomalies and potentially ameliorate some ASD symptoms. - Introduces the genetic and non-genetic causes of autism and associated intellectual disabilities - Describes the genes implicated in autistic spectrum disorders and their function - Considers major individual genetic causes of autism, Rett syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and other autism spectrum disorders, as well as their classification as synaptopathies - Presents a thorough discussion of the clinical aspects of multiple neurodevelopmental disorders and the experimental models that exist to study their pathophysiology in vitro and in vivo, including animal models and patient-derived stem cell culture

The Prion Protein
Author: Jorg Tatzelt
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780954333522
Category : Prions
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
A conformational transition of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) into an aberrantly folded isoform designated scrapie prion protein (PrPSc) is the hallmark of a variety of neurodegenerative disorders collectively called prion diseases. They include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Gerstmann-Stäussler-Scheinker syndrome in humans, scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in free-ranging deer. In contrast to the deadly properties of misfolded PrP, PrPC seems to possess a neuroprotective activity. More-over, animal models indicated that the stress-protective activity of PrPC and the neurotoxic effects of PrPSc are somehow interconnected. In this timely book, leading scientists in the field have come together to highlight the apparently incongruous activities of different PrP conformers. The articles outline current research on celluar pathways implicated in the formation and signaling of neurotoxic and physiological PrP isoforms and delineate future research direction. Topics covered include the physiologcial activity of PrPC and its possible role as a neurotrophic factor, the finding that aberrant PrP conformers can cause neurodegeneration in the absence of infectious prion propagation, the requirement of the GPI anchor of PrPC for the neurotoxic effects of scrapie prions, the pathways implicated in the formation and neurotoxic properties of cytosolically localized PrP, the impact of metal ions on the processing of PrP, and the role of autophagy in the propagation and clearance of PrPSc. The book is fully illustrated and chapters include comprehensive reference sections. Essential reading for scientists involved in prion research.

Nanoporous Gold
Author: Arne Wittstock
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 184973528X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
High-surface-area materials have recently attracted significant interest due to potential applications in various fields such as electrochemistry and catalysis, gas-phase catalysis, optics, sensors and actuators, energy harvesting and storage. In contrast to classical materials the properties of high-surface-area materials are no longer determined by their bulk, but by their nanoscale architecture. Nanoporous gold (np-Au) represents the fascinating class of mesoporous metals that have been intensively investigated in recent years. The current interest and the increasing number of scientific publications show that np-Au by itself is an outstanding nano-material that justifies a book devoted to all aspects of its properties and applications. The resulting publication is a discussion of this unique nano-material and is an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the field. The book provides a broad, multi-disciplinary platform to learn more about the properties of nanoporous gold from an inter-disciplinary perspective. It starts with an introduction and overview of state-of-the-art applications and techniques characterizing this material and its applications. It then covers the progress in research within the last years. The chapters are in-depth overviews written by the world's leading scientists in the particular field. Each chapter covers one technique or application so that the reader can easily target their favoured topic and will get the latest and state-of-the-art information in the field.
