The First Printed Translations into English of the Great Foreign Classics
Author: William James Harris
Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
"The First Printed Translations" by William James Harris is a bibliography that has been compiled with the view of supplementing existing textbooks on English literary history and assisting students in preparing for examinations in Bibliography and Literature. It will also be of service to those who are working for the professional examinations of the Library Association. The great foreign classics have exercised a direct and decided influence upon English literature and the object of this bibliography is to give in concise form the authors and titles, translations, and dates of the first English translations of the chief foreign authors, and incidentally to enable students to note the effect of such translations on the works of many of our great imaginative writers. Excerpt: "ACHILLES TATIUS. Fourth Century. Greek writer. CLEITOPHON AND LEUCIPPE. Tr. by Rev. R. Smith, 1855. One of the decadent Greek novelists. An erotic novel of a conventional type. ÆLFRIC. c. 1006. THE CATHOLIC HOMILIES. Ed. with tr. B. Thorpe, Ælfric Soc., 1844-46. LIVES OF SAINTS. Ed. Text and Tr. W. W. Skeat, E.E.T.S., 1881. Eminent Saxon prelate, one of the most learned of his time. His works, upwards of eighty in number, have been republished by the Ælfric Soc. (London, 1844-46)."

Damnable Heresy
Author: David M. Powers
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1625648707
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
Misunderstandings between races, hostilities between cultures. Anxiety from living in a time of war in one's own land. Being accused of profiteering when food was scarce. Unruly residents in a remote frontier community. Charged with speaking the unspeakable and publishing the unprintable. All of this can be found in the life of one man--William Pynchon, the Puritan entrepreneur and founder of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1636. Two things in particular stand out in Pynchon's pioneering life: he enjoyed extraordinary and uniquely positive relationships with Native peoples, and he wrote the first book banned--and burned--in Boston. Now for the first time, this book provides a comprehensive account of Pynchon's story, beginning in England, through his New England adventures, to his return home. Discover the fabric of his times and the roles Pynchon played in the Puritan venture in Old England and New England.

The Illustrious Hugo Grotius of the Law of Warre and Peace
Author: Hugo Grotius
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781616192792
Category : International law
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The first English translation of De Jure Belli et Pacis Libre Tres (by Clement Barksdale). In this momentous work Grotius describes situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines principles for the use of force. Though based on Christian natural law, Grotius advances the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he points to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. This 1655 edition is the first English translation of De Jure Belli et Pacis Libre Tres (1625). Barksdale's edition "is perceived to be part of a larger movement in England aimed partly at setting out an ideological alternative to reformation proposals under discussion and to clarifying the relations between civil and ecclesiastical authority in England" (Butler, xii). "Barksdale became a veritable "Grotian" factory, the full measure of which has never been appreciated." --WILLIAM E. BUTLER, xii HUGO GROTIUS [1583-1645], a pre-eminent contributor to international legal doctrine, was an influential Dutch jurist, philosopher and theologian. Grotius is also known for Mare Liberum (1609), which argues against territorial sovereignty of the seas.

Treaty Interpretation and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties: 30 Years on
Author: Malgosia Fitzmaurice
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004182934
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
Interpretation has always had a prominent place in international adjudication, yet its role has been further enhanced during the last few decades with the expansion of the regulatory range of international law and the proliferation of international judicial bodies. In such a diverse new world and celebrating the 30 years since the entry into force of the VCLT, this Volume on Treaty Interpretation attempts a much needed re-examination of the issues of treaty interpretation. In the first part of this Volume the authors focus on the VCLT itself and examine the nature of interpretation and the normative content of the relevant provisions. In the second and third parts of the Volume the analysis turns to the characteristics of treaty interpretation as applied within two of the most important sectors of international law i.e. that of trade and investment law on the one hand and of human rights on the other. Such a two-tiered approach allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the content and function of the principles of interpretation as enshrined in Articles 31-33 of the VCLT.
