Book Description
Excerpt from The House Behind the Poplars: A Novel The gray shades of quick coming evening settled over and around the gloomy homestead of Miles Sterling, standing solitary and half shut in from the street behind a row of Lombardy poplars, which lifted their ragged tops toward the lowering sky as if imploringly. There was a comfortless chill in the late autumn air, and ever and anon scattering hail-stones were whirled against the window-panes, in promise of the wintry storm, whose purple clouds scudded over the horizon. The bleak hill upon whose crest the house stood, was all unshielded from the forcing blasts which whistled shrill and drearily around the rattling window-panes, and the low, wood-colored building itself, looked as if prematurely hastened to decay by a sense of its own uncared for position in a bleak world. Its low windows had never repealed themselves in any second story, but stretched in a row of six along its front, shaded by the melancholy poplars which despised it in summer, and seemingly forsook it in winter, when the heavy, sodden snow of northern Ohio furnished a mantle under which they could screen themselves. Excepting these, the rambling, rail-fenced yard offered no object for the eye to rest upon. Not a flower or shrub broke the tasteless monotony of the tangled weeds and grass which spread down to tho sandy road, along which the teams of the neighboring farmers plodded and dragged in a hopeless, weary way, as if no thought of a better foothood beyond, lent rigor to the effort. Book Description
Time touches all things with destroying hand; and if he seem now and then to bestow the bloom of youth, the sap of spring, it is but a brief mockery, to be surely and swiftly followed by the wrinkles of old age, the dry leaves and bare branches of winter. And yet there are places where Time seems to linger lovingly long after youth has departed, and to which he seems loath to bring the evil day. Who has not known some even-tempered old man or woman who seemed to have drunk of the fountain of youth? Who has not seen somewhere an old town that, having long since ceased to grow, yet held its own without perceptible decline?

Book Description
2015 Reprint of the 1901 edition. "The House Behind the Cedars" is the first novel by American author Charles W. Chesnutt. The story unfolds in the southern American states of North and South Carolina a few years following the American Civil War. Rena Walden, a young woman of mixed white and black ancestry, leaves home to join her brother, who has migrated to a new city, where he lives as a white man. Following her brother's lead, Rena begins living as a white woman. The secret of her identity leads to conflict when she falls in love with a white aristocrat who learns the truth of her heredity. The ensuing drama emphasizes themes of interracial relations and depicted the intricacies of racial identity in the American south. Chesnutt's autobiography informed the novel's themes. Being of predominantly European ancestry, Chesnutt was light skinned enough to pass as a white man, although he openly identified with his African-American roots. Needless to say, his portrayal of interracial romantic relations was controversial. Although the novel was critically well received, its controversy contributed to poor financial performance. Remains to this day an important exploration of racism in American fiction.

Book Description
Although he appeared to most observers to be white, American author Charles Waddell Chestnutt had some African-American ancestry and thus was subjected to the limited opportunities, discrimination, and segregated living conditions that faced African-Americans in the United States throughout his life. An accomplished writer, Chestnutt created The House Behind the Cedars as a means of trying to depict the multidimensional complexity of race relations in the nineteenth-century American South. Recommended for fans of literary realism and social issue novels.
