Book Description
Excerpt from Sidelights on the Home Rule Movement IT is often difficult to find a suitable name for a child. Far more difficult is it to find a suit able title for a book. For while a name may be chosen just because it is borne by some one else, a book must have a title peculiar to itself. The title of the present work satisfies at least that condition. It has the further merit indeed of indicating that the scope of these pages is limited. For, apart from the personal element which per vades them, they contain but little save what is either not generally known, or generally mis understood. Party politics are rigidly ex cluded, as is everything that would savour of appeals to prejudice or passion. Book Description
Excerpt from The Home Rule Movement My friend, John O'Connor Power, once famous as "the Member for Mayo," gave me, shortly before his death in February, 1919, the papers he had collected in the course of his unique political career - commencing as an Irish Fenian and ending as a British Liberal. "Make what use you like of them," he says in his letter to me, "subject to one condition - they must not be made the basis of an attack upon any Irishman." It was easy for me to set O'Connor Powers mind at rest on that point. I am a historical writer, - of a sort, perhaps; but, most certainly, not a political pamphleteer. As such, I have no antipathies or prejudices. As such, I do not feel myself called upon to defend and justify, any more than I do to: . condemn and assail. What I like to think I have is sympathy with the aspirations of human nature, and pity for its struggles in the coil of adverse Fate. My sole object is simply to try to describe, to explain, to interpret, the principles and personalities of the Home Rule Movement from its rise under Isaac Butt in 1870 to its fall under John Dillon in 1918, as just one act in the extraordinary political and social drama of Ireland. Book Description
Excerpt from Ireland and the Home Rule Movement The great tendency which has been so marked a feature of Irish life in the course of the last decade to turn the attention of the people towards efforts at self improvement and the development of self-reliance without regard to English aid, English neglect, or English Opinion, excellent though it has been in every other respect, has had this one drawback - that there has grown up a generation of Englishmen, well intentioned towards our country, to whom the problems of Irish Government are an unknown quantity. The ignorance of Irish affairs in England is due partly to ourselves, but also to a natural heed lessness arising from distance and preoccupation with problems with which Englishmen are more intimately concerned. Excerpt from Home Rule: A Reprint From the Times of Recent Articles and Letters A profound impression was made yesterday by; the circulation throughchannels some of which mb. Glkdstone peculiarly affects of an announcement that he has definitely adopted the policy of Home Rule for Ireland. Certain details were added, varying in different versions, and in the course of the day there appeared the inevitable telegram from Mn. Gladstone declaring that no accurate representation of his views is to be found save in. His own public utterances. Every one is at liberty to form his own opinion Upon glosses and em bellishments all of which are repudiated, as well as upon the precise degree of mr. Gladstone's responsibility for the circulation of statements so well calculated to disturb the public mind. Pain ful as? Is the impression produced in this country, it is weak compared with the sensation made in Dublin, where, as our Correspondent informs us this morning, the intelligence was received with absolute dismay. There, as here, Mn. Gladstone's' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Case for Home Rule Mr. Dicey's book, as the only serious presentation of the case against Home Rule, calls for the serious consideration of those against whom it is chiefly levelled. A volume ushered into the world with so much ceremony, accepted as a sort of gospel by a certain party, and affecting to be so sweepingly destructive of a great cause, demands a patient consideration. The book is in some sense a challenge, and I have ventured to lift the glove. Perhaps I should scarcely have so ventured if I had known earlier of Mr. Morley's purpose, but I was only aware of his intention of replying to Mr. Dicey in the pages of the Nineteenth Century when I was within measurable dis tance of the end of my own work. While, however, this book is intended in the main as a reply to Mr. Dicey's volume, it is not limited solely to that purpose, but is meant at the same time to set forth the real meaning of the movement for Home Rule, the meaning which Mr. Dicey has set himself to obscure and the movement which he has striven to retard.
