Book Description
Christians form the third largest religious community in India. How has this come about? There are many studies of separate groups: but there has so far been no major history of the three large groups - Roman Catholic, Protestant and Thomas Christians (Syrians). This work attempts to meet the need for such a history. It goes right back to the beginning and traces the story through the ups and downs of at least fifteen centuries. It includes careful studies of the political and social background and of the non-Christian reactions to the Christian message. The narration is non-technical and should present few difficulties to the thoughtful reader; the more technical matters are dealt with in notes and appendices. This book will be of interest to all students of Church History and will also prove fascinating to many who are concerned with the development of Christianity as a world religion and in the dialogue between different forms of faith.

Book Description
The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --

Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Christianity in India From the Commencement of the Christian Era, Vol. 1 In publishing the present History, I do not pretend to have supplied the desideratum; for a much more extensive work would be desirable, had I leisure for the performance, and the means of incurring the res ponsibility of its publication. Neither am I entitled to the credit of entering upon the present limited under taking merely for the purpose of meeting the general wish for such a work. The duties and responsibilities of my situation are too great for me to have thought of engaging in so laborious a task, had I not been con strained by a conviction of duty to the Church of Christ. No other motive could have induced me to sit down to write history, or to persevere in it when begun for it is not without much inconvenience and many scruples that I have devoted to these volumes the time that they have required. It is a ground-breaking study, of critical importance to the ways we understand religious nationalism and the anthropology of postcolonial experience.”—Susan Bayly, author of Asian Voices in a Postcolonial Age

Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Christianity in India, Vol. 1: From the Commencement of the Christian Era; Second Portion, Comprising the History of Protestant Missions 1706 to 1816 In recording the foundation and progress of these institutions, I have studied to trace the leadings and operations of Divine Providence and Grace. Though the labourers were few, there have been among them men of Apostolic zeal, and endowed, I have some times been induced to think, with all but Apostolic gifts. They were Germans; and it cannot but be grateful to the Englishman's feelings to see the recep tion which they uniformly met with from the highest ecclesiastical authorities in England, and even from the King and Royal Family. But for the encourage ment and assistance thus afforded them, they could not, humanly speaking, have carried on their work. The Christian public, not in Great Britain only, but throughout the Continent of Europe, owes a deep, a lasting debt of gratitude to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, for the liberal patronage it afforded to these Missions almost from their com mencement. The publication of the first version of the Scriptures in an Indian language, the Tamul, is to be ascribed to that Society's assistance. I will confess, that, until I had investigated the entire series of the Society's Reports, together with the original correspondence and journals of the Missionaries, I had formed no conception of the extent, the value, the importance of the Society's labours in India during the first century of the Danish and English Missions.
