Book Description
Excerpt from The Heart of Christianity, Vol. 2 Divine Guidance is simply doing what we think to be right. - Some claim Divine Guidance as liable to grave dangers. - There are dangers in all duty doing. - We learn spiritual truth the same as other truth. - We learn how the Holy Spirit guides by being guided. - The Holy Spirit undertakes to be our teacher. - Learning implies overcoming of ignorance. - The Holy Spirit when necessary gives instantaneous lessons, but generally teaches by natural processes. - We learn by our mistakes. - Jesus learned by suffering. - There are grave dangers to persons who trifle with the Holy Spirit. - Error of judgment is the only necessary danger. - A heart filled with love is a necessary condition to Divine Guidance. - Voluntary sin is impossible to such a person. - Such a condition is supernatural. - Perpetual faith a condition. - All men under obligation to do what they think to be right. - The danger of being led by the Spirit no greater, at least, than being led by our common sense. Book Description
Excerpt from The Heart of Christianity Some devout Christian scholars who have read this book in manuscript, have sug gested that I ought to have qualified, more fully, its leading propositions. For example, in the teaching that the Holy Spirit is the guide of the Christian, it is suggested that, I lay myself open to the suspicion that I undervalue the Church and the Bible, or at least, that I see antagonism between the Holy Spirit on the one hand, and the Church and the Bible on the other. As to the latter, I am well satisfied that there can be no antagonism or contradiction between the truth of the Bible' and the lead ings of the Holy Spirit. The one must harmonize with the other. God can never contradict Himself although sometimes He may appear to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian, Vol. 2 of 2: A Story Behind Buckingham Palace there is a little square of modest houses, standing back from the tide of traffic, and nearly always as quiet as a cloister. At one angle of the square is a house somewhat larger than the rest, but just as simple and unassuming. In the dining-room of this house an elderly lady was sitting down to lunch alone, with the covers laid for another at the opposite end of the table. Book Description
Excerpt from Zenon, Vol. 2 of 3: An Historical Narrative of the Early Days of Christianity Parricide and fratricide as he was, he would doom any one to death who stood in the way of his own lust and ambition. He would sacrifice any person and any thing to have men tremble before him; and yet, when the dreaded prognostication of his own death was even accompanied by the fulfilment of an augury which he had in vain tried to defeat, he caught a glance of his own sure end, and beheld in the horrors of the tempest the anger of the gods. How different are the fruits of the correction of the true God, bringing repentance, causing godly sorrow, change of heart, change of life. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies of the Portrait of Christ, Vol. 2 In these pages I have endeavoured to trace the spiritual development, not of the life, but Jesus exhibited in the Gospel narrative. Necessarily, therefore, I have fixed my attention not on the Divine or miraculous, but on the human, side of Christ. There can be no development in miracles; it is as wonderful to be an inch above nature as to be a mile. Being a study of development, the chapters, though very short, are rigidly connected and cannot be read in isolation. The book is not an abstract essay with foot notes and references; it is semi-devotional; each chapter ends either with an invocation or a prayer. Having completed the first part of the studies I offer it by way of instalment and by way of experiment. Should it meet with general sympathy I should like to pursue the narrative to its close. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Propagation of Christianity, Vol. 2 of 3: Among the Heathen, Since the Reformation In October 1792, a few Baptist ministers, assembled at Kettering in Northamptonshire, united in instituting a Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Heathen. They, at the same time, opened a subscription for this purpose; but the whole sum contributed on that occasion amounted only to 13:2:6. As soon, however, as the object of the Society was known, they met with further encouragement and support, not only from the members of their own communion, but from Christians of other denominations. About the same time, Mr John Thomas, who had of late years made some attempts for propagating the gospel in Bengal, was in London, endeavouring to establish a fund for sending missionaries to that country, and was himself anxious to obtain a suitable companion to return with him. He had previously made two voyages to Bengal as surgeon of the Oxford East Indiaman; and when there the second time, he met with a few pious people who agreed to have a prayer-meeting together, and this led on to his preaching to them every Sabbath evening.
