Bushmeat has always provided a source of nutrition and traditional medicine for local people throughout Asia; this important resource is becoming increasingly under pressure due to loss of forest and overharvesting because of rising demand from growing human populations and trade (legal and illegal). For this reason, the conservation of forests and sustainable use of wildlife are both imperative for improving rural livelihoods and poverty alleviation. A comprehensive literature review yielded 236 papers relevant to this topic, with the greatest number of papers discussing Southeast Asia (61%) followed by South Asia (22%) and East Asia (16%). Potential solutions that emerged from the review include the use of: measures of harvest to better gauge sustainable offtake levels, protected areas and recovery zones; improved governance; and the implementation of co-management partnerships. Potential solutions for the traditional medicine trade include urban demand reduction campaigns, introduction of synthetic alternatives, increased efforts to reduce illegal trade, and implementation of certification schemes for wildlife products. In all of these cases, a myriad of social implications, such as the importance and spiritual significance of bushmeat in different cultures, the preferences for bushmeat over farmed alternatives and the tradition of wildlife-derived medicines, must be considered. Areas for further research include: the study of climate change on bushmeat and food security; the traditional medicine supply chain; consumer reaction to synthetic alternatives; the use of bushmeat particularly for medicinal purposes in urban societies; and the negative effects of the growing wildlife trade on local livelihoods.

Bushmeat is not only an important source of fat, micronutrients, and macronutrients, but it also has medicinal uses. Extensive human-wildlife interactions may lead to pathogen exchange and trigger zoonotic infectious disease outbreaks such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, Ebola, and coronavirus disease 2019. In the tropics, bushmeat has become one of the most threatened resources due to widespread habitat loss and overexploitation, largely driven by increased global demand, weak governance, and lack of enforcement. Unsustainable harvesting, consumption, and production practices are common, although drivers are complex and intertwined and vary regionally, pointing to a looming rural nutrition security and wildlife conservation issue. Growing demand in fast urbanizing markets coupled with easy access fuels the illegal trade of bushmeat, medicinal products, and wildlife-based luxury goods. Although bushmeat contributes significantly to rural people's income and poverty alleviation, overharvesting impacts those who are most dependent on the forest. To balance the rural and culturalimportance of bushmeat with conservation and public health priorities, strategies to safeguard tropical biodiversity, sustainable harvest of wildlife with reduced health risk for nutrition and medicine are urgently needed.

Our relationships with marine mammals are complex. We have used them as resources, and in some places this remains the case; viewed them as competitors and culled them (again ongoing in some localities); been so captivated and intrigued by them that we have taken them into captivity for our entertainment; and developed a lucrative eco-tourism activity focused on them in many nations. When we first envisaged this special topic, we had two overarching aims: Firstly, we hoped to generate critical evaluation of some of our relationships with these animals. Secondly, we hoped to attract knowledgeable commentators and experts who might not traditionally publish in the peer-reviewed literature. We were also asking ourselves a question about what responsibility mankind might have to marine mammals, on our rapidly changing planet? The answer to the question; can, or should, humans have responsibility for the lives of marine mammals when they are affected by our activities? - is, in our opinion, ‘yes’ – and the logical progression from this question is to direct research and effort to understand and optimise the actions, reactions and responses that mankind may be able to take.
