Excerpt from The Handy Book of Parish Law The parish is the integer both of our political and our ecclesiastical systems. But although in modern times it has been equally important in relation to either, there is no doubt that, in the first instance, it bore exclusive reference to the latter system. The earliest territorial divisions recognized by the church were, unquestionably, dioceses. The subsequent divi sion of these into parishes was the result of the growth of population. When Christianity was struggling with surrounding heathenism, it is probable that the whole of the spiritual staff Of a diocese was attached to the person of the bishop, and that its members were de spatched by him, more as missionaries than as perma nent ministers, into the different portions of his dio cese. But as the numbers Of believers increased, it became necessary that resident clergymen should be always at hand to administer to them the consolations of religion and the natural result was, the division of the diocese into separate parishes, each with its own pastor. Moreover, the landlords, partly from motives of piety, and partly from a desire to strengthen the ties which bound their tenants to them, early began to B. Book Description
Excerpt from The Clergyman's Handbook of Law: The Law of Church and Grave The three learned professions, medicine, law, and theology, overlap; and a man who does not know something of the other two can not be prominent in his own. Laws relating to Church matters are scattered through such a vast array of law books that it would be a burden for a clergyman to purchase them, and without special training he would not know where to look for the law. Therefore a law compendium covering those subjects relating to Church matters must be of great value to a clergyman. There is another view of this subject. When she was mistress of the world the laws of the Roman Empire were for the Roman citizens, particularly the patricians; the canon law was the law of the Christian people of conquered countries and the Christian plebeians of Rome. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Church Law As for the endowments by which the clergy of the Church are maintained, and its divine service provided for, they have not been bestowed by the State out of the public exchequer, but have mostly been derived from money or land offered for the purpose by sovereigns, noble men, and other persons, in their private capacity, and out of their private possessions.1 A very large amount of the property thus given was alienated from religious to secular uses in the time of the Tudors, and this alienation was confirmed by Act of Parliament; but no corresponding endowment of the clergy by Act of Parliament is to be found. Book Description
Excerpt from A Country Parish: Studies in Pastoral Theology and Church Law Law. I am in hopes that my students may find them useful in the latter respect, since they embody actual experience in a rural parish. And for others they may have a special interest, - above all for our beloved Galloway folk, in whom I have a deep and affectionate interest. The first impression was by per mission dedicated to Dr. John Hunter of Trinity Church, Glasgow. This second one I take leave to dedicate, with heartfelt love and many precious memories. Book Description
Excerpt from Parish Registers in England, Their History and Contents: With Suggestions for Securing Their Better Custody and PreservationThe want has long been felt of a handy and in expensive manual of the law and practice of registra tion, which could be consulted with confidence and read with amusement by those, who have parish registers In their charge and take an intelligent interest in their history and contents.' The only book on the subject is that of the late Mr. R. S. Burn, who was employed by the Government in the preparation of the Civil Registration Bill of 1837, and was a member of both the Royal Commissions, which were subsequently appointed for the purpose of collecting and authenti cating non-parochial registers. It would be ungracious to dwell on the defects of so diligent a labourer in a newly explored field of learning, but Mr. Burn was more successful in collecting facts than in marshalling and digesting his collections, and his History of Parish Registers is disfigured by frequent inaccuracy of quota tion, and by a want of power to grasp his subject, which makes it difficult for his readers to form a clear connected view of the different stages through which the question of registration has passed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Law of Congregational Usage These ten years since the Kansas Council have emphasized the wisdom of the work there done. The missionary societies, as there reorganized, have gone from strength to strength. Our denominational unity has been emphasized without weakening our testimony in favor either Of local autonomy or of church unity. The simple Creed which was adopted as a part Of the Preamble Of the Constitution of the National Council has been adopted by hundreds, perhaps thousands, Of churches. This new edition Of The Law of Congregational Usage finds little occasion for change in the text of the volume as originally printed. The by-laws of the National Council are brought down to date, and a new chapter is added on recent develop ments. The changes of the past ten years have not been radical, and there appear to be no revolutionary changes in sight. There will be a gradual evolution, for ours is a living organism. This volume, revised to the middle of the year 1923, should serve the churches for a number Of years to come.
