This interdisciplinary book sets forth the goal of introducing and critically addressing a new paradigm of thought based on the concepts of transcending, transcendence, and overlap as well as defining these terms in reference to children, their personality, and socialization. For many readers the concept of transcendence is mainly identified with the fields of theology or philosophy. This book seeks to demonstrate that the concept of transcendence is intricately connected with psychology, the philosophy of education, and general pedagogy. It aims to discover unity in plurality and to define the term “transcendence” in relation to the educational process. The author raises the question whether transcendence (“not being con cerned o nly with one’s own self”) is a concept of cross-curricular education and whether every school subject is able to develop the transcendent dimension of children, an important dimension which the author calls the competence of higher-order thinking. Here a new pedagogical paradigm is defined with the support of some Czech authors (Helus, Spilková, Pato?ka, Pelcová, etc.) and several quotations from the Czech curriculum; thus, a careful reflection upon this significant work will allow the reader to recognize that this new paradigm is applicable in any country of the world where the state has a primary interest in promoting the flourishing of human values and pursuing that which is considered good by society. Religious pedagogy is embedded in the entire array of fields aimed at developing the transcendent dimension of children, and therefore it plays an equal role within the overall framework of the education of children.

The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding was established in 1941 in recognition of the growing contribution of improved crop varieties to the country's agriculture. Scientific plant breeding had started inIndia soon after the rediscovery of Mendel's laws of heredity. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute set up in 1905 and a number of Agricultural Colleges in different parts of the country carried out some of the earliest work mostly inthe form of pure-line selections. In subsequent years, hybridization programmes in crops like wheat, rice, oilseeds, grain legumes, sugarcane and cotton yielded a large number of improved cultivars with significantly higher yields. A turning point came in the 1960s with the development of hybrids in several crops including inter-specific hybrids in cotton. And when new germplasm with dwarfing genes became available in wheat and rice from CIMMYT and IRRI, respectively,Indian plant breeders quickly incorporated these genes into the genetic background of the country's widely grown varieties with excellent grain quality and other desirable traits. This was to mark the beginning of modem agriculture in India as more and more varieties were developed, characterized by a high harvest index and response to modem farm inputs like the inorganic fertilizers . India's green revolution which has led to major surpluses offood grains and othercommodities like sugar and cotton has been made possible by the work of one of the largest groups of plant breeders working in a coordinated network.

No book is provoking a more animated discussion among students of the social sciences at the present time than H. G. Wells' Outline of History. The author's task, as he himself sets it, is to tell, "truly and clearly, in one continuous narrative, the whole story of life and mankind so far as it is known today." But while these two volumes are plainly for the general reader rather than for the special student of history, it does not follow that they contain nothing beyond an endless parade of names and dates. Their chief value, indeed, is in the author's interpretation of what he writes about. Events are appraised and men are weighed in the balance as he goes along. Historians in general will not agree with some of these appraisals, nor will they credit Mr. Wells with an approach to infallibility in his judgment of the men who flit across his pages; but his estimates of the relative value of facts and forces can scarcely be brushed aside because they do not command general indorsement. On some matters, unhappily, Mr. Wells has allowed his iconoclastic proclivities to run away with him. Napoleon I, for example, cannot be disposed of as a second-grade "pestilence" because "he killed fewer people than the influenza epidemic of 1918" (II, p. 384); nor will the world believe, so long as it retains its senses, that Napoleon III was " a much more intelligent man" than his uncle (II, p. 438). Even the pinchbeck himself would have rebuked this insinuation. But when all is said, these two stout volumes embody a remarkable achievement. They contain astonishingly few historical inaccuracies of the customary type. The author's advisers, and a competent galaxy of scholars they are, have kept him clear of the pitfalls. The style is terse and forceful. Mr. Wells certainly has the gift of cogent exposition.
