Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of Politics: The Present State of American Political Science This essay is addressed to graduate students. My aim is to tell young men and young women some things it may be good to know about the profession they intend to enter. If old timers think they learn something also, they are welcome to whatever they pick up. If many older members of the profession read this, some of them will find confirmation of their own positions. They may even encounter some of their own ideas stated in their own words. For I have freely utilized what I have heard said over a period of at least three decades. I hope, of course, that I have myself added something to the discussion-if I have, it is not likely to sound new to men of my own age. I have not won any prizes for keeping my thoughts to myself over the years. But the young people, I have hope, will encounter a thing or two here they have not already pondered. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Political Science As this book is meant to be a text-book for the earlier stages of political and economic studies I have not elaborate-d what may be called abnormal theories. A fair impersonal presentation of modern political theory has been my endeavour. Originally I meant to include several chapters on the history of political theory, but the book ran the danger of being overcrowded, so wherever possible I have incorporated historical sections in the individual subjects. The treatment of some subjects, e? The Government of Britain, and the Government of India, has been much more detailed than a first course of' political studies usually demands. Such detailed treatment is due to the nature of the course prescribed in India. Repetition of detail, e.g., under the Executive (chapter XVI), and under the individual governments (chapters XXI - XXVII) is also due to local exigencies. The chapter on the Government of Uapan, though not essential according to our local syllabus, is added to enable Indian students to know in outline the system of government in an eastern empire which for many years has created the deepest interest in India. The bibliography appended is intended as an initial guide. To Indian colleges wishing to start Political and Economic studies. The list has been compiled with reference to the sums usually available for such purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With every one (too few, alas! In number) Who still professes any respect for the liberties of mankind and the dignity of human nature, there cannot be a subject of more anxious, more vital solicitude, than the future fate of England, hitherto the greatest example and guarantee of both. Book Description
In recent years, the rise of fundamentalism and a related turn to religion in the humanities have led to a powerful resurgence of interest in the problem of political theology. In a critique of this contemporary fascination with the theological underpinnings of modern politics, Victoria Kahn proposes a return to secularism—whose origins she locates in the art, literature, and political theory of the early modern period—and argues in defense of literature and art as a force for secular liberal culture. Kahn draws on theorists such as Carl Schmitt, Leo Strauss, Walter Benjamin, and Hannah Arendt and their readings of Shakespeare, Hobbes, Machiavelli, and Spinoza to illustrate that the dialogue between these modern and early modern figures can help us rethink the contemporary problem of political theology. Twentieth-century critics, she shows, saw the early modern period as a break from the older form of political theology that entailed the theological legitimization of the state. Rather, the period signaled a new emphasis on a secular notion of human agency and a new preoccupation with the ways art and fiction intersected the terrain of religion.
