Book Description
Excerpt from The Fossil Crinoid Genus Dolatocrinus and Its Allies This paper is the result of studies begun many years ago, with a view to clarifying the record of the crinoid forms herein discussed from the confusion growing out of the excessive activity of some authors in species making. The drawings of the Miller and Gurley types, and those for plates 1 to 4 on Comanthocrinus, Hadrocrinus, and Himerocflnue, were made by Mr. Kenneth M. Chapman of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The text-figures were prepared by my assistant, Dr. Herrick E. Wilson. In the preparation of the other figures upon Dolatocrinus I have had the assistance of Dr. R. S. Bassler in photographing the specimens, and of Miss Francesca Keser, of the United States Geological Survey staff, in retouching the prints, for which I extend to them my sincere thanks. Book Description
Crinoids have graced the oceans for more than 500 million years. Among the most attractive fossils, crinoids had a key role in the ecology of marine communities through much of the fossil record, and their remains are prominent rock forming constituents of many limestones. This is the first comprehensive volume to bring together their form and function, classification, evolutionary history, occurrence, preservation and ecology. The main part of the book is devoted to assemblages of intact fossil crinoids, which are described in their geological setting in twenty-three chapters ranging from the Ordovician to the Tertiary. The final chapter deals with living sea lilies and feather stars. The volume is exquisitely illustrated with abundant photographs and line drawings of crinoids from sites around the world. This authoritative account recreates a fascinating picture of fossil crinoids for paleontologists, geologists, evolutionary and marine biologists, ecologists and amateur fossil collectors.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Monograph on Recent and Fossil Crinoidea: With Figures and Descriptions of Some Recent and Fossil Allied Genera Such a physical state Of things would not only satisfactorily account for the gradual introduction of animals and plants approaching to the existing Fauna and Flora, but would explain some other physiological questions of great interest. When investigating the lower fossiliferous rocks, we have frequently speculated on the probable physical conditions of the medium which enveloped our planet at the period of their deposition. If we adopt Professor Owen's ingenious and highly probable suggestion, and suppose the atmosphere, by its excess Of carbon, to have been a dense heavy fluid, whose specific gravity was only a few degrees lighter than water, we have a clear exposition Of the adaptation of the structure of molluscous animals, and the Ocean Lilies at remote geological epochs, to the peculiar physical conditions Of an atmosphere whose force Operated on the surface of the globe with a degree of energy much beyond the atmospheric pressure at the present time.
