It is the author's experience, how ever, that this detailed information is often requested, and is much harder to trace in the literature than is almost any other body of facts relating to the problem at hand. The total known geographical distribution for each species is given, not merely the records for myiasis. The lists have been prepared from published records, those which are clearly or probably erroneous being omitted, and from specimens present. In the collection of the United States National Museum or determined by the author from other sources. Geographical names have been standardized according to those used by the National Geographic Society, Washington, D. C., in the World Map published December 1943 (international boundaries as of September 1, except that the boundaries of Austria and Czechoslovakia prior to the German invasion and the boundaries of Ethiopia prior to the Italian invasion are accepted. When greater detail vvas necessary, other maps of the Society for the same general period were consulted. For convenience, political units were grouped according to the zoogeographical regions of Wallace rather than ac cording to continents. When one political unit falls within two 200 geographical regions, it is considered under the region that contains the larger part; for example, China is considered Palaearctic, India Oriental, and Mexico Neotropical. Excerpt from The House Fly: A Slayer of Men For some years it has been common knowledge to men of science that the insect known to everybody as the House Fly is a carrier of the microbes of infectious diseases, and that through its agency disease germs are conveyed from sick to healthy people in dwellings, as well as from house to house. Entomologists, Zoologists, and Bacteriologists during the past few years have specially studied this insect, which has, in the past, been regarded merely as a nuisance by reason of its obtrusiveness. The outcome of these researches is that, we now know the House Fly to be the principal carrier of the germs of infectious diseases from the sick to the healthy. In the United States of America most of the governing bodies are now alive to the necessity of taking drastic measures to diminish the numbers of these terrible flies, and also to the extreme urgency of educating public opinion on the subject. Diseases which afflict humanity would be reduced by at least two-thirds if the microbe-carrying House Flies were exterminated. For some years I have conducted campaigns in the Public Press on the necessity for taking active measures against this universal pest, which is mowing down the flower of our race. Public men, school teachers, and others have repeatedly urged me to write a small book of a popular nature on this subject, which would be within the financial reach of everybody, and this little volume is the outcome of that desire. Excerpt from Flies in Relation to Disease: Bloodsucking Flies Although under experimental conditions it is comparatively easy to demonstrate the direct transmission of certain diseases it is becoming more and more evident that, compared with in direct transmission, this mode of' infection plays a relatively unimportant part in the Spread of disease. The pathogenic agent of the disease, even under the most favourable conditions, can only survive for a very limited time (at most two to three days) on the mouth-parts of the biting-fly and unless the latter feeds on another host before the expiration of this period no infection is produced. AS a rule a fly which has had a full meal of blood rarely desires to feed again for some days and it is only those flies which are interrupted during their feeding that are liable to bite another host within a short space of time. El Debab, a trypanosomiasis of camels occurring in North Africa, is one of the best examples of a disease which seems to be transmitted in this manner. Edmond and Etienne Sergent have shewn that the outbreaks of this disease can be explained on the supposition that it is directly transmitted from infected to healthy animals by various Species of tabanids, and they note that in nature these insects frequently bite two or more animals in quick succession, being disturbed whilst feeding, through the efforts of their unwilling victims.
