Book Description
Excerpt from Electrical Mining Installations This volume has been written especially for colliery engineers and contractors engaged in the installation of electrical plant for mining purposes. The first chapter deals briefly with the elementary principles Of electrical engineering, special reference being made to alternate current working. Many readers will already have a sufficient knowledge of these principles and for them the volume will be a guide to the application Of electric power for mining work. Readers who are engineers but not essentially electrical engineers will find this opening chapter Of service, and it is hoped that the notes on alternate current working will clear up the many abstruse points on this subject and give a working knowledge Of the terms and quantities involved. Book Description
Excerpt from Electricity in Mining In Chapter V. He has discussed the principles and practice of the distribution of electricity, as it is applicable to mining work, giving descriptions of every method of distribution, even some of those that in his Opinion will not often be applied, because it has come to his knowledge that they have been applied in a few cases. In Chapter VI. He has dealt very fully with the application of electricity to the different machinery about a mine. In writing this chapter, the Author has had before his mind the fact that there are a large and increasing number of engineers who are engaged in the application of electricity to mining work, and who necessarily are not familiar with the working of mines, when they first come to them. In the past there have been a very large number of failures, and a very large amount of money wasted, owing to the fact that those who have been engaged in applying electricity to some mining problem, have not been acquainted with mines, and have been far too sanguine as to the amount of power required for performing a given amount of work. Pathetic complaints have been made at the Mining Institute, by those who have been advising mining engineers in the application of electricity, that motors supposed to deliver a great many horse power would not perform the work, say in hauling trams, that was easily performed by one horse in the flesh. It has been the Author's endeavour, in writing Chapter VI., to provide information that will enable whoever may be engaged in mining work, to form a very safe idea of the power he must provide in each case, while on the other hand he has endeavoured to show mining engineers and mine managers how that power is to be delivered, and how they are to know when they have the proper amount. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Mine Signalling Installations: A Practical Treatise on the Fitting-Up and Maintenance of Electrical Signalling Apparatus in Mines In preparing this volume, the author has endeavoured to carry out two objects, viz., to illustrate and describe such apparatus which, as the result of experience, has been found to give the best results in practical mining work, and further to indicate, by the aid of plans and diagrams, the most approved methods of installing the apparatus and maintaining the same in working order.
