Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Index to the Expositor's Bible We are in the first place, confronted by the fact of the permanent and inextinguishable life of the Bible. N o engrossment of the general mind with secularities, no change in the methods of thought, no discovery of science, and no achievement of literature puts the Bible out of court. It and it alone ministers to the perma nent and universal cravings of our being. Sir Thomas Browne puts it well: Men's works have an age like themselves, and though they outlive their authors, yet have they a stint and period to their duration. This only is a work too hard for the teeth of time, and cannot perish but in the general ames when all things will confess their ashes. The words are as true as when they were written, and they will be as true at any future period, however long this frame of things may last. We will not even quarrel with the thought that the Bible itself will come to be no longer needed, for we shall in the end be content to have no Scripture but the Living Word Himself. Now it is this which sharply distinguishes the Bible from every other book. There are, said one, three classes of books. There is. Book Description
Excerpt from The Expositor's Bible: The Epistles of St. John Since that period I have frequently turned again to these Epistles - subsequent reflection or study not seldom filling in gaps in my knowledge, or leading me to modify former interpretations. When invited last year to resume my Old work, I therefore embraced willingly the opportunity which was presented to me. Book Description
Excerpt from The Expositor's Bible: The Book of Joshua Christ. These secondary causes never could have existed had not Jesus Christ already commended Him self to all sorts of men as a Divine Saviour, sent by God to bless the world. In like manner we maintain that behind the causes by which our naturalistic historians attempt to explain the remarkable history of the Jewish people, there lay a supernatural force, but for which the Hebrews would not have been essentially different from the Edomites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, or any other Semitic tribe in their neighbour hood. It was the supernatural element underlying Hebrew history that made it the marvellous develop ment it was and that element began at the beginning, and continued more or less actively till Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Let us try to make good this position. Let us select a few Of the more remarkable occurrences Of early Hebrew history, and, in the language of Gibbon, make a candid and reasonable inquiry whether or not they can be accounted for, on the ordinary principles OI human nature, without a supernatural cause. Book Description
Excerpt from The Expositor's Greek Testament I. In the case of no book of the New Testament is it more essential to a true understanding of its language, that we should have a clear view of the circumstances under which it was composed, than in the case of 2 Corinthians. It is the most autobiographical of all St. Paul's letters, and it abounds in personal allusions, which it is dificult, at this distance of time, to appreciate, and of which some will probably always remain obscure. It glows with the heat of Iervid life, l and was evidently written under the influence of strong emotion. And, if we do not assign it to its true place in St. Paul's life, we are likely to miss a good deal of the force of its earnest and eager words. It is, therefore, desirable to enter into more detail as to the occasion of its composition than was necemry in the case of a treatise like the Epistle to the Romans, the argu ments of which are largely independent of the circumstances of the author at the time when it was written. Book Description
Excerpt from The Expositor, 1875, Vol. 1 The expositor will be, as its name indicates, devoted to the Exposition of the Sacred Scriptures. It will con tain Expository Essays and Discourses, Commentaries on the various Books of the Bible, and, occasionally, reviews of such works as are found to be most helpful in the study of the Inspired Word; in short, it will aim at gathering to itself whatever may throw light upon the sacred page. It will not address itself to scholars exclusively or mainly, but to the intelligent Christian public in general: At the same' time, it will be written by men who have already distinguished themselves in the field of Biblical criticism and exegesis, and should therefore contain much that even scholars will value.
