Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Theosophy During the last few years there has been an increasing need for some book that would give a fairly comprehensive outline of the nature and aims of the Theosophical Society, and of what are commonly called the 'Theosophical Teachings,' and would at the same time be sufficiently simple and free from Sanskrit terms to be easily readable by those who are only just beginning to study Theosophy. It is in consequence of this need, and in response to the request of many members in Australia, that this work has been undertaken. It is a very difficult task to reduce the 'Theosophical Teachings' to a form that would be readable by the average enquirer, as many of the ideas may be unfamiliar, and portions of the subject are in themselves abstruse and metaphysical. I have tried, however, to avoid the most difficult points, and have used but very few Sanskrit terms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Miss Edger gives us in the space of 202 pages a clearly written and thoughtful introduction to our colleague's well-known and widely-read volume, "The Ancient Wisdom." It is practically a digest of the leading ideas in what we may consider to be, so far, Mrs. Besant's most important contribution to Theosophical literature, and will doubtless be of service by filling a gap between Mr. Leadbeater's successful little venture "An Outline of Theosophy," and Mrs. Besant's hand-book. Miss Edger prefaces her book with a useful chapter on the origin and objects of the Society, based on our veteran President's chronicle in "Old Diary Leaves;" for the rest the work is well done and the manner of expression is suggestive and moderate. There are, however, two reasons why we should have preferred Miss Edger to compose an introduction of a more independent character. In the first place, "The Ancient Wisdom" is very clearly written and it is difficult to misunderstand what Mrs. Besant intends to convey, except, perhaps, to some extent in the Introduction and the first chapter, which cover ground inherently of the very greatest difficulty; a further introduction, therefore, which avowedly "tries to avoid the most difficult points," may perhaps prejudice to some extent the sale of The Ancient Wisdom, which is of course the last thing Miss Edger would dream of being party to; while in the second place Miss Edger shows that she has herself thought deeply on the subject and is quite capable of putting forward the present result of her own digested studies in her own way. --The Theosophical Review, Volume 32 [1903]

Book Description
This peer-reviewed study represents a culmination of years of research into the history of the Theosophical Society. In this unique project which combines biographies with source analyses, Jeffrey D. Lavoie records a detailed history of the early Theosophical Society and examines its relationship with the modern Spiritualist movement between the years 1875-1891. Special attention has been paid to some of the neglected figures associated with these organizations including Arthur Lillie- the Gnostic-occultist and early critic of the Theosophical Society; the Davenport Brothers- the Spiritualist mediums who developed many of the standard elements which became associated with modern Spiritualism; Alfred Wallace- the prominent scientist, Spiritualist, and supposed member of the Theosophical Society and many others. This work will appeal to a wide array of readers including those interested in modern religious movements, Western Esotericism, South Asian history, and Victorian studies.
