Book Description
Rising income inequality has been at the forefront of public debate in Canada in recent years, yet there is still much to learn about the economic forces driving the distribution of earnings and income in this country and how they might evolve in the future. With research showing that the tax-and-transfer system is losing the ability to counteract income disparity, the need for policy-makers to understand the factors at play is all the more urgent. Income Inequality provides a comprehensive review of Canadian inequality trends, including changing earnings and income dynamics among the middle class and top earners, wage and job polarization across provinces, and persistent poverty among vulnerable groups. The Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), in collaboration with the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN), presents new evidence by some of the country’s leading experts on the impact of skills and education, unionization and labour relations laws, as well as the complex interplay of redistributive policies and politics over time. Amid growing anxieties about the economic prospects of the middle class, Income Inequality will serve to inform the public discourse on inequality, an issue that ultimately concerns all Canadians.

Book Description
The sociological and organizational literature focuses on systems of interactions, the role of economic factors, the strategies of firms and development agencies, and the important role of organizations and institutions. [...] This work is exemplified by Rogers (1995), who provides a useful set of five analytic categories that classify the attributes that influence the potential adopters of an innovation: (1) the relative advantage of the innovation; (2) its compatibility, with the potential adopter's current way of doing things and with social norms; (3) the complexity of the innovation; (4) trialability, that is the e [...] When researchers compared, for example, the historical diffusion pattern for the automatic clothes washer to that of the radio in the United States, they found that the adoption of the latter was approximately 10 times more rapid than the former. [...] The cost of technology includes not only the price of acquisition, but more importantly the cost of the complementary investment and the real costs of learning (time and effort) required to make use of the technology. [...] A report by Baldwin and Sabourin (1998) makes use of the 1989 and 1993 Statistics Canada technology use surveys to study the incidence and competitiveness of Canadian technology users relative to the international community, and in particular the United States.

Book Description
Technology and technical change is sector- and industry-specific, embedded by locational institutions and organizations, and integrated in global networks. It is non-linear in its emergence and movement, and subsumed in the nature of micro, meso and macro interactions. Using evolutionary theory and its methodological complement of inductive research, this collection showcases selected examples of innovation and learning experience in the rapidly evolving developing economies of East Asia. Consistent with evolutionary postulations of technology and technical change, this volume provides a range of empirically rich articles that elucidate innovation and learning experiences in East Asia. The case studies range from the dramatic movement of button manufacturing in China, to the globe’s technology frontier, to the rapidly expanding but without tangible technological catch-up of garment manufacturing in the least developed country of Laos. The rich selection of industry-based national case studies provides a comprehensive account of technological catch-up experiences that will be very useful for both scholars and policy makers. This book was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.
