Book Description
“Appiah is a writer and thinker of remarkable range... [He] has packed into this short book an impressive amount of original reflection... A rich and illuminating book.” —Thomas Nagel, New York Review of Books Idealization is a fundamental feature of human thought. We build simplified models to make sense of the world, and life is a constant adjustment between the models we make and the realities we encounter. Our beliefs, desires, and sense of justice are bound up with these ideals, and we proceed “as if” our representations were true, while knowing they are not. In this elegant and original meditation, Kwame Anthony Appiah suggests that this instinct to idealize is not dangerous or distracting so much as it is necessary. As If explores how strategic untruth plays a critical role in far-flung areas of inquiry: decision theory, psychology, natural science, and political philosophy. A polymath who writes with mainstream clarity, Appiah defends the centrality of the imagination not just in the arts but in science, morality, and everyday life. “Appiah is the rare public intellectual who is also a first-rate analytic philosopher, and the characteristic virtues associated with each of these identities are very much in evidence throughout the book.” —Thomas Kelly, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

Book Description
Family life is what makes a great world! What educational courses do we have on this? Do we have a family course in every grade level at school? How many papers do the young write on this topic? How important is family? The value of life itself is reflected in family life and church life and the world. So how high should our expectations of family life be? What action plans can we make and do? When we have plans, we also have a purpose. When the love of family life is at the heart and soul of every boy/man and every girl/woman, beginning at conception and continuing on through every minute of every day, violence will fade as something that is not good. It will be replaced with gratitude for our own lives and the life of every other human being! What can we do and promote to help make this happen? Do we invite grandpas and/or grandmas to our schools and churches to talk about how great it is to be grandpas and grandmas (or great-grandpas and great-grandmas)? Do we ask them to talk about what good things they did to make their family life good and/or what they could have done better and want to teach/tell the younger people? Wouldn’t it be great if the love for family life was so highly valued and if peace and the unity of families would be the future for the next generations? Who is the ideal family? The ideal family reflects God’s love to the world! God’s love is one that sacrifices, one that has empathy for others, one that has performed miracles. It is so good to have plans in a family. An example that became humorous many years later in our family was that our fifth daughter never mowed the lawn, and we were all so busy, we didn’t notice it until she was an adult! So it is good to make sure we have plans and purpose to our family life. Life is too short for us to be just floating along. This is a good memory to laugh about because we do live in a world that is not perfect. This is earth, not heaven. People and human families may have opinions, they may have perspectives, and they may be giving their all to do good for others. This is a good kind of family life!

Book Description
Ideal Angels is a book about love in the social media age. Is it possible to keep any secrets when your entire life is online? Ideal Angels is a book about love, loss, and disconnection. One day you’re sitting, wondering where your life is going, and the next you’re on a rollercoaster, being pushed and pulled in directions you never thought possible. And loving every second of it. Ideal Angels is the story of one man, one woman, and one week. It's a second person sprint through a whirlwind week in which the man goes from nobody to everybody. Sex, drugs, something like rock and roll, the man spent so long hiding from the world in which now he is a central part. Ideal Angels is not all joy though – the world is full of fear, pressure, expectation, it’s enough to drive anyone crazy. Particularly if you’ve spent your life on a knife edge. There are so many things you’re expected to do, so many ways you’re expected to fit in. You’ve tried to make your bed, and lie in it, but that’s no longer an option. You must become everything you hate, in order to survive. How much can one person change you?

Book Description
In his distinctive work, Christopher Scarf explores the writings of the three most prominent Oxford Inklings - Charles Williams (1886-1945), C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), and J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) - to reveal and contrast their conceptions of the ideal of 'kingship'; divine, human, and mythological. As practising Christians, the faith of all three writers was central to their literary and personal visions of kingship, society, love, beauty, justice and power. Scarf investigates their beliefin God as Creator and heavenly King, opinions on the nature of His very being, and the way in which all believed the Creator to be unique rather than one among many. The relationship between the earthly and heavenly King is considered, as well as the extent to which the writers contend that earthly kings are God's viceregents, act with His authority, and are duty-bound to establish and sustain just and joyous societies. Examining the writings of all three men in detail, Scarf also highlights the covert evidence of their lives and personalities which may be discovered in their texts. An understanding of the authors' individual but overlapping views of the essential meaning of Kingship, and their personalities and early lives, will enrichthe reader's appreciation of their created worlds. This volume provides a unique focus on Kingship and the Christian beliefs of three well-loved writers, and will be of interest to any reader seeking a fuller understanding of the individuals and their works.
