Book Description
Excerpt from The Comedies of Aristophanes, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated Into Familiar Blank Verse, With Notes, Preliminary Observations on Each Play, Etc IN offering to public notice a new version of the Come dies of Aristophanes, the politician and one of the brightest ornaments of the Athenian stage, the Translator naturally feels no inconsiderable degree of embarrassment, since this author, whose language is refined by all the graces of Attic wit and elegance, has not a corresponding character for deli cacy either of expression or sentiment. Nevertheless, both as a first-rate poet and an honourable citizen, he stood so high in the estimation of those who were best able to appre ciate his worth, that I am unwilling to weary the reader's patience by an elaborate apology. Book Description
Excerpt from Aristophanes Comedies, Vol. 1 of 2: Now for the First Time Literally and Completely Translated From the Greek Tongue Into English; With Translator's Foreword, an Introduction to Each Comedy and Elucidatory Notes Perhaps the first thing to strike us paradoxical as it may sound to say so - about the Athenian Old Comedy is its modernness. Of its very nature, satiric drama comes later than Epic and Lyric poetry, Tragedy or History Aristophanes follows Homer and Simonides, Sophocles and Thucydides. Of its essence, it is free from many of the con vantions and restraining influences of earlier forms of litera ture, and enjoys much of the liberty of choice of subject and licence of method that marks present-day conditions of literary production both on and ofi the stage. Its very exist ence presupposes a fuller and bolder intellectual life, a more advanced and complete city civilization, a keener taste and livelier faculty of comprehension in the people who appreciate it, than could anywhere be found at an earlier epoch. Speak ing broadly and generally, the Aristophanic drama has more in common with modern ways of looking at things, more in common with the conditions of the modern stage, especially in certain directions-burlesque, ewtravaganza, musical farce, and even pantomime, ' than with the earlier and graver products of the Greek mind. Book Description
The so-called old comedy, of which Aristophanes is the only surviving representative, flourished at the time of the Peloponnesian War which shook Greek civilization. There is no good single modern analogue of the old comedy. It is a blend of Shakespeare's 'MidsummerA Night's Dream' with Bernard Shaw. It is extravaganza combined with the dramatic criticism of ideas and set off with occasional flights of true poetry. So at least it appears in Aristophanes, who in native genius and spontaneous mastery of expression ranks with the four or five supreme poets of Greece. This is volume one out of two and includes: The Acharnians The Knights The Clouds The Wasps Peace The Birds
