Book Description
This book describes the development of Proust's treatment of material objects from his earliest work Les Plaisirs et les jours to his mature novel À la recherche du temps perdu. It examines the literary influences on Proust's way with objects in the light of certain critical texts and reconsiders the significance of Ruskin. As the movement from unreflective and spontaneous representation to a meta-narrative of consciousness is traced, some questions as to the banality of the 'banal object' arise. The meta-narrative finds resonance in a peculiarly Proustian pictoriality which has been largely unnoticed. It resides in descriptions where objects appear simultaneously or at different times as things in paintings and in the real. By exploring connections between Proust's pictoriality and his reflections on 'matière' and 'surface', the author suggests a radical approach to the modernism of À la recherche du temps perdu.

Book Description
During a period when the field of literary studies turned away from texts to "theory," Novel Configurations: A Study of French Fiction has become an underground classic. Although it proposes a theory, that theory is inductive and solidly based in real works of fiction. While looking again at significant masterpieces that range from the early nineteenth-to the late twentieth-centuries, from the creations of traditional french writers to that of an Argentine who spent most of his productive life in France. Allan H. Pasco has perceptively indicted new but valid close readings that have revolutionized our view of these works. He suggests that La Chartreuse de Parme is rigorously organized, that Balzac was a narrational minimalists, that Huysmans developed novelistic strategies that would be played out in the Nouvea Roman, that Proust intended good readers to come away from A la recherche du temps perdu with very different but complementary interpretations, that Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie turns on a plot that seems strange only because it takes place in the mind of the narrator. From these philololgically sophisticated interpretations, Pasco lucidly, elegantly, and wittily points to categories that include all fiction. Concentrating on patterns and description, on the one hand, and external and internal organization, on the other, Novel configurations proposes a new classification that can be easily taught to novices though it will help even professional readers understand the most complex fictional innovations.

Book Description
Musical semiotics is a new discipline and paradigm of both semiotics and musicology. In its tradition, the current volume constitutes a radically new solution to the theoretical problem of how musical meanings emerge and how they are transmitted by musical signs even in most "absolute" and abstract musical works of Western classical heritage. Works from symphonies, lied, chamber music to opera are approached and studied here with methods of semiotic inspiration. Its analyses stem from systematic methods in the author's previous work, yet totally new analytic concepts are also launched in order to elucidate profound musical significations verbally. The book reflects the new phase in the author's semiotic approach, the one characterized by the so-called "existential semiotics" elaborated on the basis of philosophers from Kant , Hegel and Kierkegaard to Jaspers, Heidegger, Sartre and Marcel. The key notions like musical subject, Schein, becoming, temporality, modalities, Dasein, transcendence put musical facts in a completely new light and perspectives of interpretation. The volume attempts to make explicit what is implicit in every musical interpretation, intuition and understanding: to explain how compositions and composers "talk" to us. Its analyses are accessible due to the book's universal approach. Music is experienced as a language, communicating from one subject to another.
