Book Description
Excerpt from A Summary of Colonial Law, the Practice of the Court of Appeals From the Plantations, and of the Laws and Their Administration in All the Colonies: With Charters of Justice, Orders in Council, Etc As, I believe, it is generally known in the legal profession that one of its most learned and able members had begun a work upon the subject of the Laws of the Colonies, and that the materials he had prepared were handed over to me, it is but justice to the high and well-earned reputation of that learned person clearly to explain the nature of the transfer, in order that he may not be held responsible for any defects in the work that ought rather to be charged upon me. Mr. Serjeant Stephen, on putting into my hands the matter he had collected for the early portion of this volume, declared that he considered himself no longer to have any connection with it; and feeling, as I did, the perfect propriety of such a declaration, I have never since ventured to trouble him upon the subject. I have freely exercised the uncontrolled authority given me over the materials thus furnished, and as the work now stands I alone am answerable for its defects. Book Description
"Colonial Adventures: Commercial Law and Practice in the Making addresses the question how and to what extend the development of commercial law and practice, from Ancient Greece to the colonial empires of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, were indebted to colonial expansion and maritime trade. Illustrated by experiences in Ancient Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia, the book examines how colonial powers consciously or not reshaped the law in order to foster the prosperity of homeland manufacturers and entrepreneurs or how local authorities and settlers brought the transplanted law in line with the colonial objectives and the local constraints amid shifting economic, commercial and political realities. Contributors are: Alain Clément, Alexander Claver, Oscar Cruz-Barney, Bas De Roo, Paul du Plessis, Bernard Durand, David Gilles, Petra Mahy, David Mirhady, M. C. Mirow, Luigi Nuzzo, Phillip Lipton, Umakanth Varottil, Jakob Zollmann"--

Book Description
The essays in this volume are the result of an exhibition on legal history staged by the Singapore Academy of Law in 1995. After that exhibition, a Legal History Sub-Committee was established within the Academy to look into ways of promoting the general awareness of the roots of legal practice in Singapore. It was decided that an illustrated collection of essays on selected legal history subjects might provide the right launchpad. This book aims not only to bring the fascinating world of legal history to a much wider audience, but also to act as a springboard for future study and research. If anything, it represents the beginning of a quest to making legal history a living subject.
