Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic Citizen I swear to support the Constitution of the United States. I pledge myself, as a citizen and Knight of Columbus, to enlighten myself fully on my duties as a citizen and to conscientiously perform such duties entirely in the interest of my country and regardless of personal consequences. I pledge myself to do all in my power to preserve the integrity and purity of the ballot and to promote reverence and respect for law and order. I promise to practice my religion openly and consistently, but without ostentation and to so conduct myself in public affairs as to reflect nothing but credit upon our holy Church to the end that she may flourish and our country prosper to the greater honor and glory of God. Oath of the Knights of Columbus. The Parish School Department views with laudable pride the effective assistance of the Catholic elementary school system in every activity designed to plant in the lives of school children, a deeper and holier appreciation of the privileges and dignity of American citizenship. Conscious, too, of the effects of a sound moral training under religious sanction, it rejoices in the unfailing contributions which Catholic education is continually making to preserve our national ideals in the minds and hearts of our future citizens. Resolution of the Parish School Department of the Catholic Educational Association, June 26, 1919. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Catholics and Citizenship, And, the Influence of Women in Catholic Ireland We are blessed to see the day for which others fought and prayed. Whatever may be said regarding certain re strictions in our Constitution, the broad fact remains, clear as the light of day, that our civil authorities, from the President to the. Humblest member of the guard, are our very own. We must, then, exorcise the old spirit which prompted us to despise, outwit, oppose, harass the representatives of civil authority. We have rulers now whom we cannot but regard as lawful, and we must learn to cultivate towards them that spirit of reverence and honour which the Apostle commands. They have heavy burdens to' bear, and should have our sympathy and cc operation as well as our respect. Helpful criticism is whole some; but in speaking or writing we should remember that we are dealing with men who wield the authority given them by God. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 94: October, 1911 There can be no doubt that many people in this country, intelligent and fair-minded in other respects, have very in accurate and inadequate notions regarding the Church. With an imperfect knowledge of her history they Often combine a settled conviction that at some time or times more or less remote she abandoned the doctrine of the earliest days and gradually replaced it with the baseless traditions Of men and the complexities of theological systems. It would almost seem that in their: judgment the Church had not only grown with the centuries, but also that she had outgrown the original truth Of the Gospel and had over-adapted her teaching to the requirements of human speculation. Such misunderstandings, of course, are dealt with at length and the historical truth set forth in numberless books of theology. Non-catholic scholar ship also has made it easy to trace to the primitive Church the doctrines that are held by the Church Of to-day. But neither dogmatic treatises nor the fruits of patristic research will come to the knowledge of the many unless they be cast in a form at once simple and attractive. Truth is meant to save men, not to frighten or turn them away. The light falls gently. Hard sayings can be softened by the zeal to win. And charity is certainly a true witness to the faith Of our fathers. NO other method would avail to meet the needs of our generation, and none could prove more clearly that our Catholic belief has handed on with ever increasing value our Christian heritage. Book Description
Excerpt from Why I Am a Catholic And what do men commonly understand by religion? To all, it means in some way or other the relations that exist between God and man. Man's religious convictions mean those views which he holds with regard to who and what God is, with regard to God's nature, with regard to how God has acted respecting himself and the world of his fellowmen. They mean his views with regard to what God's wishes may be, if He has any such wishes, respect ing man's actions during this life and as to what God's plan may be, if any, respecting man's future life. All those views, all those convictions, constitute what we call man's religious belief. Further, religious convictions embrace a man's opinions as to his own nature and destiny. Has his life and being come from the hand of God, or is it in its existence quite independent and altogether self-sufficient? Is that living, vital principle within man which we call the soul to live forever or is it to cease to exist at the moment of the body's death? A man's answers to questions like these constitute his religious convictions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Progress of the Catholic Church in America: And the Great Columbian Catholic Congress of 1893 The honest American citizen possesses two things which he may leave to his children, - and these two things are more precious than gold, they are love of God and love of country. The child that learns from his father or mother that he, being a catholic, can be no alien on American soil, is rich - for he has the best of all knowledge in his possession, and knowledge makes him the equal of any other man. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is strength. Knowledge is the key opening all doors; and in this book lies that knowledge which causes our children to know and love their freedom, and which will give them the weapons necessary to defend their right to enjoy all the blessings of a lano which their ancestors in the faith of the Catholic Church discovered, and in which other ancestors of theirs in the Catholic faith proclaimed freedom of conscience for the first time. "Your father was a foreigner," the descendant of the Mayflower pilgrims may say, "therefore I am more of an American than you." "You are a foreigner," that living libel on American institutions, the modern Know-nothing may sneer, "You are a Catholic; this is a Protestant country." Without a knowledge of the truth, your child may blush and hang his head and be ashamed of his father. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Catholic Principles There is something about the Church, the genius of its system, the enthusiasm of its de fenders, the spirit which animates it, the self assertive way it teaches, the development of its work and worship on lines, and in directions, with which Protestants are not familiar, for which the logic of neither Protestants nor Romanists can account; and which therefore challenges their at tention and their criticism.
