Book Description
I suppose it is inevitable that a jazz musician would want to ‘blow his own trumpet,’ but I truly believe that this novel contains such a detailed insight into the drama that unfolds, that it could not have possibly been written by someone else. The story is about social politics in America and beyond during the twentieth century, as seen through the lives of a family of jazz musicians. Their work takes them into areas where racism and bigotry abound not only in the States but abroad too, but, ‘The music goes round and around,’ despite their misgivings. Their recordings provide the ‘pictures’ on an otherwise blank canvas, for without them there would be only hear say. Their story is taken up by two reporters who finally get to the bottom of a racist conspiracy on the other side of the world. It follows that a knowledge and empathy with the past is all important in a story such as this. I’m an historian and retired teacher of politics as well as being a part-time jazz musician, and I have just concluded a radio show called ‘Jazz Dreams.’ I’ve come across racism in many different guises and in many corners of the Globe during my lifetime, and I know how insidious it can be. In this story I have tried to explain how important it is that individuals take personal responsibility and confront it. That takes courage and the book is about this also. A recent visit to New Zealand including Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound gave me the idea for a perfect hiding place. (Bond meets Lord of the Rings perhaps?) ‘It was good to read your book. Your thoughts on the pitfalls and perils of jazz are very well made. I will be depositing a copy in the UK national jazz archive.’ Digby Fairweather (trumpeter, writer and broadcaster.) ‘My uncle Lou would have been really pleased to see his band amongst all the other great British outfits such as Jack Hylton and Roy Fox mentioned in the book.’ Paul Preager Director Colston Hall Bristol. ‘I am pleased to offer my support for this book that tells a story of jazz as only a jazz musician would tell it.’ Acker Bilk MBE and International ‘Stranger on the Shore,’ clarinettist. ‘This book evokes the majesty and the mystery of Otago’s Doubtful Sound Fiord’ Paul Anthony, New Zealand Arts Council. ‘You have reminded us all that the long struggle against racism is far from over. It re-invents itself every generation just like the Hydra.’ David Oakensen, Deputy Mayor of Frome Somerset.

ISBN: 1426990979
Category : Fiction

Pages : 200
Book Description
Before the war in Vietnam began in earnest, hundreds of U.S. advisors were stationed in Indo-China. Our early deployed were to train, educate and perform strategic planning for allied troops soon to follow. Although written as a novel, this story is based upon historical facts. The plot follows the duties of one soldier ordered behind enemy lines into "non-combative", neutral neighboring countries to achieve his goals. Forward air controllers duties included not only air support services but also mapping and intelligence gathering. The initial troops were few in numbers yet performed duties far above and beyond the call of duty. This is one story of thousands which has never been told. Join me for "30TY DAYS IN HELL"

What was it like working for the CIA during 9/11? Do only spies get to travel? More Stories from Langley has physicists getting recruited to “the agency” during the Cold War, foreign-language majors getting lucky chances, and quests to “learn by living” turning into sweaty-palmed calls to the U.S. embassy after being detained by Russian intelligence officers. Murder in Brentwood
Author: Mark Fuhrman
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1621573222
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 374
Book Description
For audiences of the popular FX television series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, based on Jeffrey Toobin's The Run of His Life and starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., John Travolta, David Schwimmer, and Courtney B. Vance. Named on Vogue Magazine's "American Crime Story Reading List" as one of the "eight definitive books on the trial of the century." Twenty years ago, America was captivated by the awful drama of the O.J. Simpson trial. The Simpson "Dream Team" legal defense had a seemingly impossible task: convincing a jury that their client was innocent of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. In order for O.J. Simpson to get away with murder, the defense attorneys had to destroy the reputation of Mark Fuhrman, a brilliant Los Angeles detective who was the lead on the murder scene and had collected overwhelming physical evidence against Simpson. Now Fuhrman tells his side of the story in the #1 New York Times bestseller Murder in Brentwood, a damning exposé that reveals why and how Simpson's prosecution was bungled. Fuhrman offers a sincere mea culpa for allowing his personal mistakes to become a focal point of the defense's strategy but also stands by the evidence he collected, writing: "One thing I will not apologize for is my policework on the O.J. Simpson case." With Fuhrman's own hand-drawn maps of the crime scene, his reconstruction of the murders, and interrogation transcripts, Murder in Brentwood is the book that sets the record straight about what really happened on June 12, 1994—and reveals why the O.J. Simpson trial was such a catastrophe.
