Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Public Worship The following chapters were originally delivered as the Bohlen Lectures at Philadelphia in January, 1919. Part of their substance was afterwards repeated at S. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, during Lent. That I had thus both American and English audiences in view has helped me greatly in broadening my outlook upon the subject, and will not I hope make these pages less acceptable either to American or English readers. There is considerable difference not only between the rites but also between the customs and traditions of the two Churches; and in this era of Prayer Book revision we English Churchmen have much to learn from the sister Church, which has, with a greater freedom from convention and prejudice, already made considerable alterations in public worship, providing some admirable examples of reform and a few examples also of mistakes to be avoided. Book Description
A resource for worshipers today looking to change hardened worship patterns that stand in the way of everyday spirituality. All too often, those who attend church or synagogue find themselves bored or baffled by the service. Their predominant thought is how slowly the time ticks by--and that the service never seems to end. Written for laypeople and clergy of any denomination, The Art of Public Prayer examines how and why religious ritual works--and why it often doesn't work. The Art of Public Prayer uses psychology, social science, theology and common sense to explain the key roles played by ritual, symbolism, liturgy and song in services. Each chapter features "conversation points" designed to get you and your faith community thinking and talking about your own worship patterns--where they succeed, and where they need improvement. The Art of Public Prayer can help you and your fellow congregants revitalize your worship service by allowing you to organize and direct your own worship, making it a meaningful and fulfilling part of your life.

Book Description
Although numerous studies have examined biblical and theological rationales for using the visual arts in worship, this book by Lisa J. DeBoer fills in a piece of the picture missing so far -- the social dimensions of both our churches and the various art worlds represented in our congregations. The first part of the book looks at Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Protestantism in turn -- including case studies of specific congregations -- showing how each tradition's use of the visual arts reveals an underlying ecclesiology. DeBoer then focuses on six themes that emerge when Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant uses of the visual arts are examined together -- the arts as expressions of the church's local and universal character, the meanings attributed to particular styles of art for the church, the role of the arts in enculturating the gospel, and more. DeBoer's Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church will focus and deepen the thinking of pastors, worship leaders, artists, students, and laypeople regarding what the arts might do in the midst of their congregations.
