Book Description
Excerpt from American Historical Magazine, Vol. 1: January, 1906 This grant of the duke gave not only the property in the soil, but also the right and power of government. No other title to the soil than his was ever recognized by the law. It was unappropriated land, a savage wilderness, a great waste. To such property the law appoints the king as owner, be cause there is no other. Moreover, it is a fundamental prin ciple of the common law that all lands, even those of private persons, are held of the king. Where there is no private owner, therefore, all persons must claim through him. (3 Bl. Com., 49, In respect to the old settled and granted lands, this may be a fiction of law, but it is truth and history here. It was a newly discovered wilderness conquered by the king of England; it was the king's from necessity, and belonged to him solely, substantially, and beneficially. Book Description
Excerpt from Magazine of American History, Vol. 14: With Notes and Queries; July December, 1885 One night, near midnight, I entered the grounds for the purpose of in specting the guard and was surprised to see a bright light in the East room. As I entered the basement I heard a loud noise as of many voices talking loudly, mingled with the ringing of arms, coming from the great reception room. On questioning the commander of the guard I learned that many gentlemen had entered the house at a late hour, but they had come in boldly, no objection had been made from within, but on the contrary Captain Todd had told him that all was right. I ascended the interior staircase and entered the East room, where I found more than fifty men, among whom were Hon. Cassius M. Clay and General Lane. All were armed with muskets which they were generally examining, and it was the ringing of many rammers in the musket barrels which had caused the noise I had heard. Mr. Clay informed me that he and a large number of political friends deeming it very improper that the President's person should in such times be unguarded, had formed a voluntary guard which would remain there every night and see to it that Mr. Lincoln was well protected. I ap plauded the good spirit exhibited, but did not, however, cease the posting of the outside guards, nor the nightly inspections myself as before, until the time came when others than myself became responsible for the safety of the President. Book Description
Excerpt from Americana, Vol. 17: American Historical Magazine; January, 1923-December, 1923 Thus perished the pride and glory of my people. His efforts to resist the advance of civilization among the Iroquois sprang from a mistaken patriotism. He knew not the irresistible power that impels its progress. The stalwart oak with its hundred arms could not. Hope to beat back the fierce tempest. He lived to see the power and glory of the confederate Iroquois culminate. He saw their friend ship courted by the French and English monarchies, when those gigantic powers were grappling in a desperate struggle for suprem acy in the new world. He lived to see his nation decline; its power, its influence, its numbers wasting away like spring snows on verdant hill-sides.
