Book Description
Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 34: November 1950 Labor productivity of agriculture and the railroad industry increased at about the same pace from 1933 until we entered the war. The phenomenal increase in both freight and passenger traffic during the war far exceeded the gain in man-hour inputs, resulting in a big increase in labor productivity in 1942 and '1943. As far as passenger travel is concerned, the measure of production used does not take into ac count the discomfort resulting from overcrowded cars and the pressing into service of old and out-of-date equip ment. But gigantic troop movements were executed and huge quantities of war material were hauled. Productivity of labor in the railroad industry began. Declining in 1944 and by 1946 was only slightly above gross farm production per hour. Nd other farm product and probably no old and established industry. Can match the gains made in production of food grains per hour of labor during the last 30 years. The climb was even steeper for wheat. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 34: September 1950 The rise in prices of farm products and the wartime need for increased supplies provided the incentives for-all out production. Farmers drew heavily on the-backlog of improved productionpractices that had been developed dur ing the interwar years. The weather was favorable and agricultural output soared. By 1942, the first year after Pearl Harbor, the output of farm products was'28 percent higher than the 1935 - 39 average and a sixth higher than in 1940. Output stayed near the 1942 level through 194-5, even though work ers were leaving the farms to enter the armed services or take jobs in the city. In 1942, farm employment was 5 per cent lower than the prewar average; in 1945 it was 10 percent lower. Farm operators made up for the.
