The medieval era war lord sends his youngest son and one of his best soldiers to visit four cities and collect the final signatures on a peace treaty and mutual defence agreement that the warlord has been negotiating for years. No sooner than they have completed their mission they discover that they have to return home overland in the dead of winter to defend their own castles against invasion by an enemy with a powerful new weapon. The story is the coming of age of a young man who learns that the search for love may not be as distant as it might seem and the search for honour sometimes ends at home.
