This SAE Standard is intended to establish uniform methods for testing and evaluation of hose and hose assemblies for use in high temperature transmission oil systems and high temperature lubricating oil systems using petroleum base oils within a temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees C (-40 to 302 degrees F) and a maximum working pressure of 1.5 MPa (217 psi). Hose construction, dimensions, identification, and hose fitting configurations shall be agreed upon by the supplier and user.The hot oil circulation test previously in SAE J1019 is now in SAE J1405.

The procedures contained herein have been developed to establish a uniform method for comparative impulse testing of hydraulic hose assemblies with and without flexing in order to determine the effect of flexing on ultimate life of hose. The test method minimizes variables to give a comparison between flexing and non-flexing. Basic impulse test parameters are to be in accordance with SAE J343 except as modified to incorporate flexing. This test is not a requirement for SAE J517 hose.
