Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Board of Education: Together With The, Tenth Annual Report of the Secretary of the Board There is, besides, a heartiness of feeling in the minds of the community, which, though it is not all that could be desired, augurs well for the future. A great point was gained when the public attention was effectually directed to this subject. An earnest consideration of its importance awakened, at once, an interest in it, excited a spirit of inquiry, provoked discus sion, elicited truth, and induced those who had differed in matters of mere form to unite, with a common zeal, in the accomplishment of a common object. The reports of the school committees of the various towns in the Commonwealth are a good index of the state of public feeling. A volume of Abstracts, for the year 1845 - 6, prepared with great care by the Secretary of the Board, has just been published. To an attentive examination of the work, the attention of the Legislature is respectfully invited. As a record of the opinions of those, who, from time to time, are supposed to be best acquainted with our system of education. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Board of Education of the State of Connecticut: Presented to the General Assembly, May Session, 1875, Together With the Annual Report of the Secretary of the Board The Tenth Annual Report of the Board of Education is herewith presented. The past year has been one of marked progress in our pub lic schools. Statistics can show but one phase of them, and cannot distinctly indicate that improvement in their quality which is the most valuable kind of progress. Yet the advance which the statistics of the last year reveal is' most gratifying. In nearly every particular there has been essential improve ment. Never before has so large a preportion of the children of the State been taught in these schools. The amount paid for teachers' services exceeded a million dollars. The sum raised and expended for the.schools largely surpassed that of any former year. This increase was derived from taxation. The period covered by these statistics corresponded almost exactly with the first twelve months of the panic in financial affairs. It is no small honor to the people of the State that at a time of exceptional stringency in money matters they have provided more liberally for popular education than at any for mer period. They have thus shown that they hold fast the faith of their fathers in universal intelligence, and that how ever they may differ upon other subjects, upon this the great majority of them are essentially agreed. At a time when the common school system of our country is exposed to violent and persistent assaults, this incidental evidence that the people of Connecticut heartily believe in it is especially valuable. Ten years have now elapsed since the Board of Education was constituted. This is, therefore, a fit occasion for reviewing the record of the past decade, and noting what changes have occurred. The following table, giving a comparative view of certain items from the reports of 1865 and 1875, shows some of these changes. Excerpt from The Massachusetts System of Common Schools: Being an Enlarged and Revised Edition of the Tenth Annual Report of the First Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education To write a History of Popular Education in Massachusetts would be a work of great interest, and of little difficulty. Such a history, however, seems not to have been contemplated, and, therefore, would not be warranted, by those Resolves of the Legislature under which the following pages are prepared. The Resolves provide only for the republication of so much of his [the late Secretary's] Tenth Annual Report, as, with the requisite additions and alterations, Will exhibit a just and correct View of the Common School system of Massachusetts, and the provisions of law relating to it. An adequate idea of this system, however, can hardly be obtained without a brief reference to its origin, and to those great fundamental principles, which its authors and supporters seem rather to have tacitly assumed than to have fully expounded.
