Book Description
First published in 1958, Teach Yourself Etiquette and Good Manners is a fascinating guide packed full of both timeless advice and tips that in today's world will make you chuckle. So, if you've ever wondered how you should peel an apple at a dinner party, break-off an engagement or announce the birth of a baby in 'the proper manner', this is the book for you! A couple of extracts: Some people maintain that the skin of an apple is nutritious. On informal occasions a person desiring to remove the skin is permitted to do so with a fruit knife. If he enjoys (and who does not?) removing the skin in one unbroken piece, he should nevertheless refrain from advertising his prowess by holding the apple so far above the plate that a foot or so of skin dangles freely downwards. When a man, having met a girl a few times in the company of other friends, invites her out to dinner or to come to a dance with him, the reason, surely, is that he finds her attractive and would like to know her better. If this feeling is not reciprocated, the girl has only to decline this and subsequent invitations on the pretext of previous engagements... After one or two such outings, the girl can raise the question of paying her own share in future. By this time she should know something about him and be able to say in effect: 'I enjoy going out with you, I should like to do it again. But I'm earning my living, you're not a millionaire, and it's not fair that you should go on paying for both of us every time. So either I must stop going with you, which would be a pity, or you must let me pay my share.' In 2008 Teach Yourself will celebrate its 70th anniversary. As part of our plans to commemorate this publishing phenomenon, we will publish four facsimiles of some of our quirkiest and classic titles. Each of these facsimiles will look and feel exactly like the originals; hardback, dust-jacket, end papers. They will be beautiful (and very competitively priced) little books.

Book Description
Originally published in 1958, Teach Yourself Good Manners is a fascinating guide, packed full of both timeless advice and tips that demonstrate just how much life has changed in the 60 years since it published. Indeed, the author, W S Norman, would doubtless be horrified by modern manners and would implore us to study his rather uptight but very funny rules for modern living. Amusing, intriguing and sometimes rather inspiring, this handbook is a window into how life would have looked had we lived in a 'a simpler age' - in which, confusingly, they had rather a lot of strange rules. Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

From revealing the secrets behind successful networking and job interviews, to decoding proper dining habits, to wedding decorum, Etiquette Rules! succinctly gives readers everything they need to successfully maneuver with manners in today’s world. Praise for Etiquette Rules! “An excellent general primer for a young woman entering the workplace.” —The New York Times “In a world where reading news headlines would have you believe it has gone to hell in a hand-basket, it is nice to see someone making the effort to uphold some common civility and manners which, though they might be updated now for same-sex weddings, work cubicles or food trucks, are never out of style.” —DearAuthor.com

Book Description
"This is not another etiquette book detailing the antiquated, excruciating, and frankly confusing minefield of rules lauded by traditionalists. Let's face it, many of us will never need to know which side a snail fork should be placed at the dinner table, nor are we likely to 'take tea' with the Queen. Yet we could all do with a little help in perfecting our manners, self-confidence, and social graces for everyday living. English Etiquette details everything the English know about why etiquette matters, in a modern, understandable, and unpretentious way -- while teaching you how to cultivate a traditional and charming countenance to rival any royal. Covering topics such as gallantry and grace, common decency, lifestyle choices, the quintessential English wardrobe, and behaviour in the home, you will learn how to shoehorn a little English gentility from this practical field guide into your daily life. So pull your socks up ladies and gentlemen, pour yourself a cup of tea, and join The Darling Academy as we return to a culture of good manners, civility, and chivalry the world is longing for. A proper, polite, and graceful way of living is making a comeback. Long may it prevail."--Page 4 of cover.
