Book Description
"This collection of essays examines one of the most important, yet understudied, media authors of all time--Norman Corwin--using him as a critical lens to consider the history of multimedia authorship, particularly in the realm of sound. Known for seven decades as the 'poet laureate' of radio, Corwin is most famous for his radio dramas, which reached tens of millions of listeners around the world and contributed to radio drama's success as a mass media form in the 1930s and 1940s. But Corwin was a pioneer in multiple media, including cinema, theater, TV, public service broadcasting, journalism, and even cantata. In each of these areas, Corwin had a distinctive approach to sonic aesthetics and mastery of multiple aspects of media production, relying in part on his inventive atmospheric effects in the studio both prerecorded, and, more impressively, live in real time. From the front lines of World War II to his role as Chief of Special Projects for United Nations Radio and his influence on media today, the political and social aspect of Corwin's work is woven into these essays. With a foreword by Michele Hilmes and contributions from Thomas Doherty, Mary Ann Watson, Shawn VanCour, David Ossman and others, this volume cements Corwin's reputation as perhaps the greatest writer in the history of radio, while also showing that his long career is a neglected model of multimedia authorship."--Provided by publisher.

Book Description
If anyone injures another person, whatever he has done shall be done to him. If he breaks a bone, one of his bones shall be broken; if he puts out an eye, one of his eyes shall be put out; if he knocks out a tooth, one of his teeth shall be knocked out. Whatever injury he causes another person shall be done to him in return (Leviticus 24:19 20). The fleeting glimpse of a face disappearing in a crowd leads Alison to track down Kate. Kate had been her best friend when theyd both been studying at university. They hadnt seen one another for twenty-eight years. Alison confides in Kate the trauma she has been through, how it has ruined her life, and the hatred she has towards those whom she considers responsible for it. She is horrified to hear that Kate has suffered more, and that her life has also been ruined. Kate has the same anger and hatred for those who destroyed her life. They talk about revenge. Alison introduces Kate to Anne and Helen. Kate feels an instant rapport with them. She tells them the horror she has endured. Anne is enraged and tells Kate the two of them will punish those who have caused her agony. Alison and Helen want to help. Kate subtly names someone responsible for Alisons suffering, who should also be punished. Anne, Alison, Kate, and Helenfour intelligent, well-educated, law-abiding women in their late forties plot to avenge those who have ruined Kates and Alisons life. An escapist fantasy at its core, A Very Sick Practice isnt exactly realistic, but it delivers plenty of cathartic fun. The characters are well-written, if a little extreme. These are very angry women who have been victims of injustice. The reader can see that theyre passionate about achieving their revenge and righting these wrongs, but their story is not all about selfishness they are intent on helping one another, not merely focusing on their own causes. Some readers might balk at the lengths these women go to and what they consider justice. Despite any flaws, one quality is paramount: A Very Sick Practice holds a readers attention from beginning to end. -BlueInk Review

Book Description
Since the onset of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd, America has grappled with its racial history, leading to the removal of statues and other markers commemorating pro-slavery sympathizers and segregationists from public spaces. Some of these white supremacist statues had stood on or near college and university campuses since the Jim Crow era, symbolizing the reluctance of American higher education to confront its racist past. In Confronting Jim Crow, Robert Cohen explores the University of Georgia's long history of racism and the struggle to overcome it, shedding light on white Georgia's historical amnesia concerning the university's role in sustaining the Jim Crow system. By extending the historical analysis beyond the desegregation crisis of 1961, Cohen unveils UGA's deep-rooted anti-Black stance preceding formal desegregation efforts. Through the lens of Black and white student, faculty, and administration perspectives, this book exposes the enduring impact of Jim Crow and its lingering effects on campus integration.

Book Description
Those of us who read a daily newspaper or scan a weekly magazine have grown accustomed to being told that the science of genetics influences countless aspects of our existence, from human development, health, and disease to the ecological balance of our planet. We accept this, and yet most of us have only the faintest idea of what a gene really is or how it functions. This book, then, is a primer on modern genetics, and its aim is to teach any interested general reader all he or she needs to know about how genes work - and about how a detailed knowledge of their workings can be applied to some of the most pressing problems of our time. Written by two world-renowned researchers in molecular biology and illustrated with uncommon clarity and precision, Dealing with Genes will satisfy the interest of general readers, including those who have little formal background in biology. It will also serve admirably as an authoritative text for students taking nonmajors courses in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, and related disciplines.
